Cologne - Bonn _ bengal firework
by valtor
We plan to be at the beginning of May in Germany. We shall visit for 3 days Berlin, and then we plan to be 2-3 days in Cologne or Bonn (and to visit these two cities). We would like to take a boat cruise on May 6th, for Bengal firework. However, all the tickets for this event - starting from Bonn - are sold out. There are still tickets from Bad Godesberg. We shall be there without car, and the boat cruise is finished late in the night (1 o'clock), in Bad Godesberg.
I am very confused now for this part of our vacation (Cologne - Bonn - boat cruise), and I do not know were is the best place to have the hotel, taking in consideration that:
- we come by train from Berlin
- we shall stay 3 nights and then we shall continue by train to Cohem
- during this 3 days stay we shall visit Cologne, Bonn and we want to have boat cruise - in the night - for Bengal firework, and the available tickets are only from Bad Godesberg.
Please help!

Cologne - somewhere near the main railway station.
Should be no problem, this is anyway the area with the highest hotel density in Cologne.

You can travel in a Sa/Su night from Bad Godesberg to Cologne at
01:25
01:42
02:12
03:12 (hourly throughout the night)
On such events it's however common that more connections are offered.

Thank you very much Abalada and Palo. Based on your advise, I looked in train timetable and you are so right...a lot of trains all the night! Thanks again.
Travel Tips for Cologne
The *beginning* of Karneval is...
by Antity
The *beginning* of Karneval is on November 11th. At
exactly 11:11am, be at 'Alter Markt' (Altstadt, 5min
by foot from the central train station 'Köln Hauptbahnhof'). Yes, it *will* be crowded, but also real
fun. Karneval is officially opened that day and there's
a whole day of party. Be sure to check the many bars
and pubs starting at maybe 4pm that day, since the
party goes on that day. Wear some funny costume.
After this day, the 'fifth season' (Karneval) in Köln
has begun, but only for this very day. November 12th
is 'normal' again, and the next street activities
will be in February.
Was Päffgen but now its Pfaffen
by richiecdisc about Pfaffen
As you walk around town this building stands out with its bright orange facade and ornate wooden entrance. Even it were not a pub it would get my attention. But it was once Altstadt Päffgen, the brewery's oldest old town pub and was still the case on my 1999 visit. In 2001 the pub owner who's name if Pfaffen had a fight with the brewery and decided to open his own brewery and hence the name change. It seems more a restaurant now though there are some stand up barrels in the back and the Kölsch is still served from wooden kegs. I had been looking for the Päffgen so was a bit disappointed though it led me to discovering that brewery's great off the beaten location 20 minutes north of the old down center. Pfaffen's beer was certainly drinkable and the interior of the pub is well worth going in for one just to see it. A homey pub and casual wear seems the norm.
Getting away from Bratwurst & Brauhaus
by jasperstam about Plat du Jour
If you're slightly fed up with Pub meals & Loud Music:
A very nice & quiet little spot near the Hohenzaller Ring, Friesinger platz area. Relaxed atmosphere. Kitchen is on the french side of the continental. Good dishes for a reasonable price (starters €6-9, ma ins €12-17). Friendly staff. Well worth the time and money.
Kölner Dom
by Rupanworld
It is Germany's largest cathedral. It took almost six hundred years to completion. Started in the 13th Century, and completed in the 19th century. The Cologne Hauptbahnhof was completed three years earlier than the Cathedral and both stand just side by side and if one is visiting the city by train there's no chance of missing it. The size of the cathedral is huge, impossible to capture in the frame of a camera and it dominates the entire skyline of Cologne. Interestingly, this huge Cathedral was one of the few big Churches in Germany to escape the bombings during World War II as it is said that the British pilots used it as a navigation point.
Cathedral - interior
by yumyum
If you are already stunned by the height of the cathedral from the outside, wait till you get inside! It's absolutely amazing.
There are many beautiful tinted glass windows and chapels which are the burial places to an archbishop. One of the highlights is the Shrine of the Three Magi, which is entirely in gold.
Take a seat while you are there, so that you can look at the high ceilings too.
