Travel Tips for Detmold

rummage sales

by buzzz

On Saturday afternoons in Detmold on the bridge over the river people set up their tables of junk to sell. Like a garage or car boot sale but without the garage or car. It all adds to the nice atmosphere in the town.

Norderteich Conservation Park

by ettiewyn

The Norderteich (North Pond) is the oldest conservation park in Lippe. It was made by building a dam very long ago - it already existed in 1115, mentioned in a directory as Norddyck. It was used by monks to fish and by the princes of Lippe to hunt for ducks.

Today, the lake is about 12,5 ha big, the whole park has 22,7 ha. The lake is surrounded by swamps and marshes. It has been a conservation park since 1949. Especially because of the big reed areas the park is a home to many birds (f.ex. great crested grebe, moorhen, green-winged teal) and plants (f.ex. reed mace, bedstraw, sedge).
There is a walkway around the lake, it takes about 2 hours. In the south, there is a convenient wooden hut where you can sit and watch the birds. Especially watching the grebes diving for food is very interesting.

There is also a restaurant, the Entenkrug, where you can see wild pigs in a big enclosure.

Adlerwarte - see the eagles!

by ettiewyn

"Warte" is an old German word for "observation point", and "Adler" means eagle - thus, the Adlerwarte is a place where you can watch and observe eagles. Being more then seventy years old, the Adlerwarte in the small town of Berlebeck near Detmold is one of the oldest and most famous of its kind in Europe and hosts eagles and other birds of prey from all continents. It is also a sanctuary for sick and old eagles and engages in breeding programs for endangered species.
The Adlerwarte is certainly one of the most famous Things To Do in the Detmold area, and it is a special favourite with the kids. You can walk around and have a look at all the birds in the big aviaries, but the special highlight is the flying show, when they present some of the birds flying and catching prey. In fact, some of the birds live nearly free and only return to the Adlerwarte for food.
There is also a shop, a playground and an information centre.

It is open from 15th February until 15th November each year (09.30 til 17.30), but the flying shows only go from 1st March til 1st November. The shows take place at 11.00 and 15.00. Entry fee is 5 Euros for adults and 2,50 for children. Dogs are not allowed inside.

The Aqualip is a big water park in Detmold and especially a big adventure for kids. It has a 84m long slide, a big current pool, a heated pool outside, a whirl pool, a big sport pool, a pool for non-swimmers and one for babies. There are also different saunas and a saltwater spa. If you get hungry, there is a café/restaurant that sells chips, hamburgers and ice cream.
It is the biggest water park of the area and if you travel with kids who like being in the water, I can really recommend it.

It is open from 11am til 9pm and on weekends from 9am til 9pm.

The prices are:
Two hours - adult 4,85 euro, kids 3,05 euro, family 12,25 euro
Four hours - adult 6,10 euro, kids 4,30 euro, family 16,35 euro
Day ticket - adult 8,15 euro, kids 5,60 euro, family 19,40 euro
