Dortmund to Frankfurt (FRA) airport

by happyhormones

Can anyone advise on getting from Dortmund to Frankfurt airport? Would appreciate estimated costs and timings for bus/train.

I arrive in Dortmund on Friday afternoon and need to get to Frankfurt airport at 10am on Saturday morning.

Thank you for any advice! :)

Hi, there are several trains between Dortmund and Frankfurt airport. Check
www.bahn.de, click on "International guests" for English. Choose Frankfurt Flughafen Fernbf. for your destination. Through trains are 70 Euro, but when you book ahead it's cheaper.

http://reiseauskunft.bahn.de/bin/query.exe/dn
From: DO (for Dortumnd Hbf (main railway station)
or
From: Flughafen, Dortmund (Dortmund Airport)
To: FRA (for Frankfurt Airport train station)

Dortmund Hbf to Frankfurt Airport is with
ICE EUR 70,00 2,25-2,5 hours
EC/IC EUR 48,00 ~3,5 hours
local trains EUR 35,70 (Sa/So EUR 30,00*) 4,25-5 hours

Most ICE trains take the high speed link between Cologne and Frankfurt Airport. 300 kph. Fast but also expensive.
For the EC/IC trains select as via station "Koblenz". This route is through the Middle Rhine Valley. Very scenic. Tourist wise definitly the recommend route.

If you want to use the local trains choose as means of transport "only local transport" instead of "standard search". The faster of these (slow) trains use yet another route.
* On Saturday you could use the HappyWeekendTicket (EUR 30,-) for this. But there is only one possible connection departing 04:44 at Dortmund Hbf.

If you arrive at Dortmund Airport. The bus from the airport to Holzwickede train station is free. Normal tickets over 100 km are valid 2 days. Thus you could buy a ticket Holzwickede to Frankfurt Airport and stay e.g. in Dortmund or Cologne.
In the validity time of your ticket you can use any train as long it is covered by the route and train class you bought your ticket for.
You can buy tickets directly from the DB timetable and print it on your printer.
Seat reservation is free - but only available for ICE, EC/IC trains.

As you wrote in another posting using "us".
The HappyWeekendTicket is valid for 1 to 5 persons travelling together. Thus travelling with 5 persons from Dortmund (or anywhere else in Germany) to Frankfurt Airport is just EUR 6,00 per person.

Bus. Besides the bus to Holzwickede there is also an Airport-Express bus to Dortmund Hbf (EUR 5,00).
So far for you bus options.

Travel Tips for Dortmund

Der Thueringer (Curry)

by yumyum

Der Thueringer is my favourite fast food stop in Dortmund. Here I often eat a Thueringer Bratwurst in a bun. You can also eat Currywurst and french fries etc.

Round the corner there is a proper restaurant also called "Der Thueringer" but this fast food place by the same name (and owner) is easily recognisable because it has an open window where you can buy your bratwurst without entering the shop. In the warm season there are a few tables outdoor but there is also some indoor seating. The Thueringer Bratwurst, which is much longer than the bun.

finally, a DORTMUND page

"Temporary Highlight"

Sometimes I wonder why I don't have a page about a certain place... mostly it's because I visited these places before I bought the digital camera. So here comes my Dortmund page after my first visit with the camera...

The organisation team of the soccer world cup 2006 have come up with the idea of a pre-world-cup event before the actual championships. A "designer" called Andre Heller invented a football-globe, connecting sports with the world, and that globe is travelling around Germany at the moment. Read more in the tip below.

"Historical Highlight"

The former coal mine Zeche Zollern was among the first that was note completely torn down after its closure but turned into a museum. All major buildings are still there, and they are extremely beautiful!! More pictures in the travelogue.

"More Highlights"

- a huge shopping street

- a famous football team and beautiful stadium

- beer (quality to be discussed)

- theatre, opera, concert hall

- zoo
