Zeche Zollern, Zeche Zollverein or Deutsches Bergbaumuseum

by schmechi

I'll be in Ruhr next March for one single day and so I've only got time for one single sight. I want to do something linked to the region's history, so I tend to visit a sight, which have to do with mining. I googled the industrial heritages mentioned in the subject, so I am curious, which of these sights you would prefer.

Additionally I read, that Zeche Zollern was renovated in 2010. Is the job already done or will there be handicaps due to renovation?

BTW: I know, that only Zeche Zollern is directly in Dortmund, but as far as I realize moving by public transport is no problem at all in Ruhr.

I have not been to Zeche Zollern, but selecting one of the remaining other sites, I would opt for the Bergbaumuseum in Bochum, as it includes an "underground" visit including a demonstration of all steps of how the coal was mined. Found ebverything very impressive.
Visited Zeche Zollverein in 2009. The dimensions are impressive, especially the coke oven (Kokerei). To get it all, several guided tours are required. You can do an outside tour without guide, but that gives no real insight view. In 2009 we found the signposting as not satisfactory. This might have changed during 2010 due to "European Culture Capital Year".
According to their website, there are still some restrictions for visitors.

Enjoy your trip and "Glück auf"!

A lot has changed in Zollverein in 2010, and the newly opened Ruhrmuseum is definitely a worthwhile plus. It is one of those museums where cou could spend hours and hours exploring, discovering big and little things. My Essen page has some pictures and stuff.
Signposting has improved for sure. Even better: The visitor centre hands out leaflets with a plan of the grounds and some background information, grab one of those if you plan to walk the grounds on your own. For my taste Zollverein has become a bit too "Schickimicki" with all those new culture institutions and installations, though.
Zollverein can easily be reached by tram 117 from Essen central station.

I have not (yet) visited the other two sites, so I cannot compare.
Getting around by public transport is easy but it consumes time. Since time seems to be an issue, I'd pick the site that is closest to where you are.

Rathaus (town hall)

by yumyum

The old city hall was built in 1899 in the new renaissance style by Friedrich Kullrich. After the WW2 bombing it was rebuilt in a mix of new renaissance and Industriezeitalter.

The Berswordt hall was added in 2002 to the side of the town hall and it's also for civil service and public use.
