Well, on that website under "Nachtleben" (Nightlife), I see Die Altstadt (The Old City), which is the first place that came to mind for nightlife, as I was taken there many years ago for a beer in an area of outdoor pubs and restaurants at 10:30 p.m. with the evening light still in the sky (yes, it was June - the longest days of the year)...

So, that's one little data point that maybe they know something ;-)

Go to the Altstadt. There you will find several bars/restaurants all lined up in a row. My friend from Dusseldort joked when he said it is the largest bar in the world (because they are all next to each other). it is a fun street. you can't miss it!

Hi,
I have lived in Duesseldorf for the last 6 years. The old town is great. There is always something going on. Its nickname is the longest bar in the world - something like 200 bars.

The old town is more than that. Hang out by the river and have a coffee. Bring a book and lay out in the sun, watch the Rhein go by.

There is a public swimming pool along the Rhein in Lorick (suburb of Duss). I think its 3 euro per day.

English movies at cinestar on the oberkassel side. In the mid of July, there is the biggest carnival on the Rhein. Lots of rides and beer tents.

The harbour is another nice area. Trendy. bars and restaurants.

If you have more specific questions, let me know.

I think the others have hit it on the head, Alt Stadt to start with, for all ages over 18. For beer I preferred the Alt bier and especially Schumacher. There is one in the Alt Stadt and on Ost Strasse, my favorite is on Ost Strasse 123, if I remember correctly. They both serve food.

Düsseldorf is my favorite large city in Germany and I lived there for a while. Kaiserswert, an old city north of Dü is nice for a visit and you can take a Train or ship there from the Rhein by the Alt Stadt. Of course there are good train connections from the main train station/HBF to any place in Germany or Europe for that mater.

Many other things are possible, for me I enjoy the local flea/Flo markets on the weekends. Also, check with the tourist office across from the main train station for more suggestions.

I agree - the old part of Dusseldorf was absolutely awesome! We had lunch at Zum Schiffchen, which is a restaurant that has been there forever. The food was just terrific. And, the bar Zum Uerige was a great hang out too.

The old town is right along the Rhein River. On a nice day, it's a great place to have lunch or coffee outside, or just grab a freshly made waffle and hang out along the river.

On my trip, Dusseldorf was a major highlight! You can see some of our photos at Shuweb.com.

Also - in case you want to branch out of Dusseldorf - I loved Muenster!

Travel Tips for Düsseldorf

Cartwheel Turners

by TinyTuck

The cartwheel turner is the symbole of Düsseldorf. You will often find monuments or pieces of art showing cartwheel turners, and ones in a while kids will turn cartwheels on the streets to earn money.
In the picture you can see the 'Radschlägerbrunnen' (fountain of the cartwheel turners) on the Burgplatz in the Altstadt.

The Rhine and Ruhr Region

by antistar

Düsseldorf is part of an enormous urban conglomeration. Within minutes you can be in any number of great cities, including Cologne, Bonn and Dortmund. You can get to these places via the excellent public transport system, or in good weather you can take a river boat up the Rhine. If you come for a week or two in Düsseldorf, there's little chance of getting bored, because if you run out of things to do in Düsseldorf, there are a thousand and one more things to do a short train ride away.

City Transport

by antistar

Düsseldorf's transport system is a vast and somewhat confusing system of trams, busses and underground trains (more like trams that spend some time underground). There is also a similarly bewildering array of tickets to choose from, from simple single tickets at €1.10 to monthly tickets to the "Ticket 2000 9.00 am by subscription" (whatever that is). The day ticket is probably your best bet, and at €7 euros for up to 5 adults (Zone A) on the same ticket is an absolute bargain if you are in a group. Zone A will cover you for practically everything you might, as a tourist, want to see in the city. If you are in doubt, just ask at the tourist information centre.

A China Lounge

by sabsi about China Lounge "Rote Laterne"

This place looks more like a trendy bar than a restaurant. Very minimalistic style that is so popular all over Düsseldorf. They serve fantastic food here though and the whole place is very friendly.

The name meaning "Red Lantern" is a good choice as the bar is in a street where prostitutes wait for clients and the red lantern is often associated with red light district activities. Spicy homemade noodles. Very tasty and not too spicy because I asked for the mild version.

Media Port Buildings

by sandysmith

This once derelict area has now blossomed into a small media town - production studios for film, TV and radio companies and the European Media Institute being located here.
Most of the buildings here are modern - the occassional old building is squeezed in amongst them. One building has these strange creatures crawling up it!
