Christmas Markets
by ricky52
Hi there
We plan to fly into Dusseldorf to visit the Christmas Markets and have a little tour whilst we are there.
We plan to visit Hamlin, Aachen, Nurnberg and Cologne. My question is, would this be the best city to fly into to visit these places?
Any help would be useful. We plan to go out in the first week in December.
Regards
Ricky & Sheila

DB timetable
From: DUS (for Düsseldorf Airport)
To: Cologne (38 min with RE trains; EUR 8,50)
To: Aachen
To: Hameln
To: Nuernberg (or just "N")
Cologne is really close. Aachen is also in the state North Rhine - Westphalia.
Hamelin and Nuremberg - this is a Germany trip.
Most logical would be a route Hamelin, Düsseldorf, Cologne, Aachen, Nuremberg.
Closer to Hamelin are the airports Hannover HAJ, Paderborn PAD, Münster/Osnabrück FMO and Dortmund DTM.
Nuremberg has its own airport (NUE).
If this is the best option is something else. This is probably the place where you can get the most convenient and cheapest flight to/from.

For rail offers see
http://www.bahn.co.uk/prices.php
(e.g. Euro Domino Pass)
For travelling inside the state North Rhine - Westphalia (NRW - Düsseldorf, Cologne, Aachen) and even to a few close by places (e.g. Hamelin) you can use the SchönerTagTicket (HappyDayTicket) NRW. This ticket is valid one day for all public transport (local trains (RB, RE, IRE), S-Bahn, trams, buses) in NRW. And for a few train lines outside NRW - see map:
http://www.bahn.de/d_regional/view/mdb/content/pdf/regional/nordrhein_/streckenkarte_2004.pdf
On weekdays the ticket is however only valid past 9am. On Sa or Su the whole day.
The ticket is valid for 2-5 persons travelling together.
Price is EUR 27,- (from ticket machines - at the counter it is EUR 2,- more).

the tour your are planing includes a lot of stress. The christmas market are totally overcrowded, extremly on weekends.
I've done the one in nuremberg and cologne and pass normally the one in my home town- muenster is called / its said to be a very nice one- but you must have uncredible patience because off the masses of people.
i hope you have a good timing for the rest of the days.

Travel Tips for Düsseldorf
Traffic lights
by elbe
Düsseldorf is the only German city I know where traffic lights not just have green and red lights but also an orange light. And that makes the crossing quiete interesting - for German circumstances :-)
So you still can cross the street if you see the orange light but hurry up from the second on you see the red one, because then the cars get green and will knock you down (no, not really ;-)
The best place for evening drinks and breakfasts!
by sabsi about Ab der Fisch
A nice place for a drink, dinner or breakfast! Very popular and always busy!!! The breakfast choice they have is very nice and I'm sure you will find something tasty... like the "Parmesan Ei" with Rocket, Eggs and Parmesan that Steve had ;-)
Mongolian Barbecue
by sabsi about Mongo's
Mongo's is a very popular Mongolian Barbecue place in the port. For 20 Euro you can go to the buffet as many times as you like and fill your bowl with fresh and fancy ingredients that will be cooked with one of the delicious sauces you chose earlier. You can choose from different meats (e.g. pork, beef, chicken, austrich, kangaroo, lamb etc etc) or fish (even shark!), have a huge selection on vegetables, nuts, spices, noodles etc etc. There's 8 different sauces you can choose from, I liked the Thai one best!
City view
by Redlats
From the top of Rheinturm, one can get a good view of the city of Düsseldorf, in fact in the picture below, Cologne is in the far distance (about 40 km away),
Düsseldorf's population is approximately 600,000 - same size as my city Winnipeg, but whereas Winnipeg's closest big city neighbour is Minneapolis, 8-9 hours away, Düsseldorf is very close (less than an hour's drive) to a number of big cities like Cologne and Bonn.
Roggendorf-Haus
by antistar
Again, like the Colorium, showing how a lot of imagination, and not a great deal of money, can transform ordinary buildings, the Roggendorf-Haus is a simple 1950s office building that has become a charming and colourful part of the harbour's landscape. This has been achieved with little more than the addition of big palmed plastic humans climbing all over the outside walls, and looking as if they are preparing to dive off into the harbour waters. Simple, cheap, but highly effective.
