Christmas Markets
by IceBear7
Christmas time is wonderful in Düsseldorf, there are Christmas markets all over the city center. You get lots of food, sweets, hot drinks with a tiny little bit of alcool in it (you only notice after 3 cups or so), gifts, traditonal decorations for your home, lights everywhere, people enjoying themselves, meeting up for a drink after work or after an exhausting day of shopping, and the top of the Kö becomes the location for ice skating.
My favorite Christmas market is the one on Schadowplatz with a fantastic stand with yummy Feuerzangen-Bowle ( a hot drink made of red wine, rum and sugar). Check out their webpage:

Every year the is a little Finland village close to Schadowplatz as well, with food and drink and clothes and ice sculptures - see picture.
On weekends by the way, you will not see that many locals - the city is taken over by our Dutch and Belgian neighbours who come in huge buses and spend their money here. Town is very busy on these days (last weekend they counted 250 buses with visitors), but everyone seems to enjoy themselves!
PS: 3 cups of Glühwein is enough, 4 is too much! Even if you have something to eat in between.
Great pasta, nice atmosphere and wines!
by sabsi about Bar Olio
On the ground of an old railway station this place doesn't really look like a fancy bar and great pasta place - but it is!! They serve great wines and food! The Bruschetta we had was excellent and so was the pasta arrabiata! In summer you can sit ourside. Come early, it's always crowded here! "Arty!" But feel free to wear whatever you like!
More than just soup
by IceBear7 about Löffelbar
Another restaurant that is close to my apartment. The most popular dishes are their soups, in three different sizes and changing menus all the time. They also have some "normal" dishes that are very tasty as well.
They have huge windows and I love sitting there in the afternoon with a coffee and watch all my neighbours walking / driving by. Don't get me wrong, I really like the Löffelbar. But I always get the impression that people only go there if Ab der Fisch next door is full... which means every night at 7 or so :-)
The city centre
by Gili_S
The city centre has lots of stores. It's look as it should be as a regional business centre but even here you can take a break by the canal, find a nice silent spot to walk around or maybe to relax from the rush.
Konigsallee
by antistar
The Kö, or Konigsallee, is a prime piece of retailing real estate stretching from Karl-Theodor-Str. to the Landskrone. On both sides of the waterway there are many exclusive and expensive shops, as well as huge department stores and shopping complexes, like the Galeria Kaufhof and Seven. The kinds of shopping on offer includes much in the way of luxury clothes and electronics, like fur coats for many thousands of euros. While the walk along the waterway is pleasant, the crowds can be enormous, like Konigstr. in Stuttgart, and the architecture is not all that much to shout about for the most part. There are some pleasant monument, like Triton pictured, and a few buildings of note, like the Galeria Kaufhof itself, but mostly it is just a gorge of capitalistic extravagence.
