Rosenmonntag

by CliffClaven

Can anyone provide information on the Rosenmonntag (23 February) carnival parade in Düsseldorf? Just how crazy does the city get?

Re: Rosenmonntag

I just wanna say, you better go to Cologne that day , not to Düsseldorf!!!

Hello,

the most craziest days are Altweiber (Old Town - thursday 19.) and sunday (Königsallee) the 22..

How crazy do they get ? hmm ? Yes!
But the hardcore parade that day is in *ologne! ;)

actually all the time between Thursday (Weiberfastnacht) and Monday will be wild. The parades will mean thousands of people jammed in the streets, the real party is afterwards everywhere in the old town. I agree that Weiberfastnacht in Cologne is the ultimate Carnival experience - try to make it there, if possible. Maybe you can also find out about the "Geisterzoch" on Saturday evening in Cologne - it the "anachist" answer to established carnival parades - no parade waggons, but fun. On Sunday there will be a small parade in the Königsallee in Düsseldorf and the "school and neighborhood parade" in cologne - less commerce, more fun than Rosenmontag. If you want to get the full carnival experience, you should try to see one of these smaller parades as well. The locals will welcome you with open arms, as long as you avoid to order a "Kölsch" in Düsseldorf or an "Alt" in Cologne - both cities are traditionally rivalling each other, and this goes for their local brews as well

Travel Tips for Düsseldorf

diamonds are a girl's best friend

by richiecdisc

Backpacks make train travel a lot easier but someone has to figure out a way to transport alt with the new 3 oz regulations on planes! Layers are necessary especially in winter. Being on the Rhine makes Düsseldorf a damp and often cold place. Wide angle makes for fun if distorted pub shots and the zoom is great for taking sneaky photos of friends. Diamonds may be a girl's best friend but roses are for everyone.

A nice student type pub

by sabsi about Cafe Modigliani

Cafe Modigliani is a kinda cheap pub (at least for Düsseldorf standards) with a nice atmosphere in Unterbilk. People are more the "student type" than the yuppie scene you normally meet in Düsseldorf. Very refreshing!
The whole place is full of posters. Even at the ceiling. None.

I found a Korean Mama in D-Dorf

by SwanCarlos about HanSik

I have a favorite restaurant in Los Angeles owned and run by a lovely Korean woman who grew up in Japan so her food reflects the mixture of both cultures. Well, when I walked in to HanSik - next to Na-Ni-Wa - I kinda knew I was closer to home than I thought. This place is a simple affair, great food and at affordable prices.

The Mama of HanSik made me feel at home immediately. As soon as I was sat and ordered she returned with a wonderful selection of the often pickled salads known as "kim-Chi" I was most interested in one made with white onions and Korean Shiso - or at least that's what I think I worked it out to be. The Host/Mama tried to communicate to me through a wonderful mix of Korean, English and German that she grew the herbs herself. I will be back many times before I leave this wonderful city. A true slice of Seoul. I would suggest starting with the Bim-Bim-Bop or maybe the Bul-Go-Gi if you are a ravenous meat eater. I would also suggest for those of you - like I was - suffering from a cold, that you order the Kim-Chi Chigae a wonderful soup made with Tofu, Miso paste and the ever spicey Kim-Chi made from Nappa Cabbage. The vegetable Gyoza (Pot-Stickers) were wonderful there also.

Impression of rich detail

by Goldenboy

Wandering around. How would you do that in a church? Me? Still considering respect, sit down in the middle of the hall, and look above. Lets forget awhile any details of history written in your guidebooks or brochure available there. You can enjoy arts, in your way. You know if you can admire, or just skip it.

Modern Art Museum K20 (Kunstsammlung NRW)

by sabsi

A big museum full of modern art of the 20th century. You will find a big collection of Paul Klee pictures and many pieces by Kandinsky, Picasso, Magritte, Miro, Dali, Mondrian, Matisse, Warhol etc etc here.

Lately the collection of pieces of Joseph Beuys - one of the most famous sons of the city - returned to K20. You will find some of his famous crazy pieces here now! Mad!!!

The museum is located in a very nice and modern building. With natural light and huge rooms it's the perfect place to look at some huge and crazy paintings. You are only allowed to take pictures without flash but it's bright enough to get some great shots!

Some pics of pieces I found at K20 are in the Museum travelogue on this page! Enjoy!
