Discount Airlines
by gnunez311
Can anyone recommend a discount airline that services Germany and France. I just can't believe that AirFrance wants to charge me about 650 E between Dusseldorf and Paris. Should I be thinking about Trains instead?
Thanks!

Neither www.easyjet.com nor www.germanwing.com fly between Paris and Düsseldorf, but to Dortmund rescpectivly to Cologne/Bonn. Both would be an alternative. From these airports you'll need aprrox 1 hour to Düsseldorf.
Travel time by train Paris Nord to Düsseldorf Hbf is 4:36.
Paris to Cologne with Thalys costs
single (Librys) Confort 2 EUR 80,-
special return (Smilys) Confort 2 EUR 56,-
Cologne to Düsseldorf is
single ICE 2nd class EUR 15,60 (20 min)
single IC 2nd class EUR 9,80 (20 min)
single RE 2nd class EUR 6,90 (30 min)
DB timetable

You can use
D for Düsseldorf Hbf (Hauptbahnhof = main railway station)
DUS as shortcut for Düsseldorf Airport
CGN as shortcut for Cologne/Bonn Airport
Paris CDG (for Paris Charles de Gaulle Airport)
for Dortmund Airport you have to type in
"Flughafen, Dortmund"

Travel Tips for Düsseldorf
Alt means old in German and...
by richiecdisc
Alt means old in German and altbier refers to beers brewed in the old manner. Germany is best know for inventing the lager style of beer. Prior to this, all beers were ales and thus top fermented and generally at warmer temperatures. Germany was to first to devise bottom fermenting yeast and 'lagered' their beers in caves and therefore were best served on the cooler side. Aside from Hefeweizens which are also ales, only Alt and Kolsch (from closeby rival Koln) remain as examples of the pre-lager era. These beers have a fruitier palate though many of the alts are quite hoppy and dry. This picture depicts another unusual practice. The beers rest on a little shelf that runs around the walls of the main hall. What is different is the border, which is a blackboard that the beer waiters mark how many beers you have consumed.

Posh Fish
by sabsi about Meerbar
The Meerbar is a rather fancy restaurant located in one of the Gehry buildings in the Media Port. It's very stylish and the food is great. Prices are a bit over the top though. We came here with friends one night and had a great time, way too many bottles of wine and tasty food.
At the weekend you have to dress up in order to pass by the bouncers as at night the Meerbar turns into a posh cocktail lounge full of your typical Düsseldorf clientel. I'd rather be shop than to spend my evening there then!
In summer there's a lounge area outside as well which is very nice and provides you with great views of the Gehry Buildings and the Media Port. And of Düsseldorf's high society of course ;) As I am not a huge fish fan and the Meerbar serves mostly fish and seafood I had truffled pasta with parmesan which was very tasty. The portion wasn't exactly huge though. I also loved the bread with olive oil you get as appetizer. The olive oil must have been a really expensive one, it was sooooo tasty.
Crazy Buildings...
by steventilly
The Gehry buildings down at the Media Port on the Rhine. These are quite stunning, especially in the right light. Towards sunset seems to be a very good time to me.
There are three buildings - one in brick, one in "white" and one in Titanium. The titanium one is most people's favourite because of its reflectiveness.
Carschhaus
by antistar
Similar in style, but more difficult to photograph, the Carschhaus is tucked behind the Kö on Heinrich-Heine-Platz in the Altstadt. This department store was built a little later than the Kaufhof an der Kö, in 1916, but it has a similar Art Nouveau style. It is an exclusive store, selling almost nothing but luxury goods. Probably the most interesting aspect of its history was that it had to be moved 23 meters from its original location to make way for the Düsseldorf underground, but they retained its Art Nouveau facade.
