Family Visit
by baron1970
Hi!
I will be visiting Dusseldorf with my wife and two children in late November. I was wondering how the weather would be. Besides any suggestions for a safe location to stay, any attractions (such as zoo, park, etc.) for our 2 & 6 years old kids, shopping outlets if any.
Thank you in advance ...

Expect rainy and cold weather (10C). Sometimes the first snow falls around November 20th.
Unique attraction: take a local train ride to Wuppertal (30 min) and then ride the suspension railway (Schwebebahn) . An experience which is unique on the wolrld. See this site:
http://www.wuppertaler-schwebebahn.de/EN/html/flashintro.htm
You and your kids will like it. Can be combined with a visit to the Wuppertal Zoo.
Enjoy your trip!

Colares is bang on with the weather, except for perhaps the snow. It's late fall and can be miserable. I worked in Dusseldorf for almost 2 years and the two "snow falls" we had were in January. Rainy and miserable weather for sure. Don't count on much snow - I think the total that came down the two winters I spent there might have totalled just over 1 cm.
Not a lot of stuff for kids, so far as I remember. I had my wife and daughter (who was 6 at the time) were there for a week during March, and they spent a lot of time travelling around there area - Cologne, Bonn and beyond exploring there. The Konigsalle and Altstadt are nice to wander through. There are a couple of small castles and associated parks, and some nice stretches along the Rhein. I stayed close to the downtown area most of the time, and didn't have a car, so I can't really comment on some of the suburbs at all

Due to extreme climatic changes the World is experiencing at the moment, trying to predict the weather can be difficult because of local, on the day variations.
Most places now are seeing weather conditions well outside the norm.
The information below should be used as a guide only.
Here is the average weather for Dusseldorf for this time of year.
Enjoy your holiday.

Hi,
you could do a trip to Cologne, it takes only about an hour by train (or even less). In Cologne there is a quiet famous zoo with a famous and huge elephant area. Of course Cologne itself is worth a visit with the Rhein River and the cathedral.
Düsseldorf itself has a very nice old city center, but unfortunately I know nothing more of it then this as I have only been there visiting friends or going to concerts.
I have to agree, although the weather is not very predictable nowadays it's 99% certain that in November in this part of Germany it will be absolutely disgusting ;-) Last year there has been a lot of snow in November, but most of the years this is not so.
So take raingear etc. with you and it should be ok. Just bear in mind that when it snows or the rain is very heavy there could be delays with the trains.
If you have any questions regarding Cologne zoo feel free to ask me ;-)
Hope you have a wonderful trip :-)

Travel Tips for Düsseldorf
View from Kniebrücke
by IceBear7
I love skyscrapers, so the skyline of Düsseldorf isn't that great for me, compared to Frankfurt for example, or other huge cities.
However, whenever coming home from a western direction, crossing the bridge is a pleasant feeling. Seeing all the landmarks, seeing people enjoying themselves, seeing the ships (for cargo as well as people)...
I also love crossing the river by bike and stopping in the middle of the bridge just to watch for a couple of minutes.
Düsseldorf wouldn't be the same without its river and its bridges.
Immer Wiiiieder DEG
by IceBear7
The best you can do on a Friday evening or Sunday afternoon in winter: head towards Brehmstraße ice hockey stadium and cheer for the DEG. Officially called DEG Metro Stars. But they'll always be our DEG.
It's a legendary team, with legendary supporters. With a legendary victory tonight. Beating the Frankfurt Lions 6:2. Frankfurt is No.1 in the German ice hockey league at this stage. They were German champions last year. You wouldn't believe it after tonight's match.
The icehockey stadium on Brehmstraße is cult, and it's just around the corner from where I live. I can here the fans singing and cheering after every single match. But still they are going to build a new ice hockey stadium, and I doubt it's going to be the same. It's on Brehmstraße where the DEG fights for victory and not in a new place somewhere in the middle of nowhere.
Our DEG has the best supporters in the world, and it's just a tiny little bit of songs against the Cologne sharks. Just one little song tonight ;-) - red/ yellow jersey or scarf or at least a cap
- wunderkerzen
- papierschnipsel
- glöckchen

You have to be Psychic to understand the Tram system in Dusseldorf.
I stood at a stop and looked at which tram numbers stopped at the stop when along came a tram that wasnt down as stopping there and was heading exactly where I wanted to go !!! If anyone understands it I would love to hear how it works
Italian cuisine in the harbour
by IceBear7 about Zollhof
In the busy harbour area, this Italian restaurant is a quiet, relaxed place to have some great pasta and pizza. All kinds of crowds: families, couples, young people on dates, business partners, friends. Nice interior, mostly Italian staff. Portions are just right.
Not exactly cheap, standard Düsseldorf prices I would say. Not the standard pasta sauces but somewhat special (for example pasta with caviar). Wonderful pasta with a creamy sauce with crawfish and asparagus.
Nordpark
by Sjalen
In the park next to the aquarium you will find lots of sculptures from the 1930s when all things strong and handsome were valued in society. If you have been to Berlin or Nürnberg you will recognise the very typical style, with two giant horses guarding the entrance to the park (see third picture).
