I have a 6 hours layover at Dusseldorf airport and wondering if there's anything I can do or see in between. Will arrive at 11am and depart at 5pm this Saturday.
Thanks!
Hi,
no, there is nothing really interesting to see around the airport, but you can go into Düsseldorf or up to Köln. I would prefer Köln (there are direct trains from Düsseldorf Airport via Düsseldorf main station to Köln and beyond, it takes about 10 min to Düseldorf and about 40 min to Köln. I don't know Düsseldorf very well, in Köln you can visit the cathedral (right across the main station), the Roman-Germanic museum (behind the cathedral), Ludwig Museum of the modern art (also in the vicinity) or the Chocolate museum (on the Rhine, about 15 min walking from the main station). The timetables you can get from www.bahn.de. You will need to take the Skytrain from the terminals to the arport station, it runs about every 3 min and takes 10 min.
For such short time, I recommend going to Düsseldorf. It will take you only 10 minutes or so to get to the city by train from the airport. I visited both cities many times and I like them both, but I rather say that because Düsseldorf is just behind the corner, why to travel all the way to Köln? You will have enough interesting places to see and can hang around in the beautiful old city in Düsseldorf. In addition, very important, Düsseldorf have the better beer. ;-)
Taxi would be a rip off if you think that the train will cost maybe 6 or 7 euro for return ticket. Use the RE or S trains, they are cheap and save your money for shopping, schnitzel and beer.
Thank you so much for all the suggestions. Very helpful. Alexej, I was actually in Cologne 2 weeks ago and have explored the city. Okay, I'll take the train to the city then and have lunch there.
Thanks again!

One more question, from DUS airport station, which station do I get off in the city? I'm checking out www.bahn.de for the schedule. Thanks again.
Hauptbahnhof = main station. If you buy the local train ticket, it is also good for the subways, trams and buses in Düsseldorf (one way). If you take the subway to Heinrich-Heine-Allee, you will emerge on the east side of the old city and can walk through it towards the Rhine.

Enjoy your stay!
Thank you! =)
Sohn56de, I am not saying that the taxi is ripping you off, it just that for traveller saving those 30 euro can be very significant. Also I know how easy is to get out from the airport by the free sky train to the DB train station and from there S or RE trains are rather frequent. If she figures out how to buy ticket from the ticket machine I am not sure that the taxi will be even faster as traffic delay is so common there from 7 am to 9 pm.
Do any of you know the PLAZA HOTEL in Dusseldorf? I am wondering if this is a good central location and easy access from the train station. Thank you.

It's full of bars and pubs (more than 260 of them, just choose one!...) People call it 'the longest bar in the world'.. and everytime I was there - no matter whether it was a friday or in the middle of the week - this place was busy busy busy!!

One of my favorite healthy German fast food chains. "FFF / Fast Food Fish". It's a well-established chain found in all the German-speaking countries (over 355 outlets in Germany) that is a healthier equivalent of a seafood section of a delicattesen on the coast merged with a Long John silver's minus the unhealthy heavy frying. Fresh and healthy prepared seafood in a fast food format but not as bad as the usual fish n' chips (though they offer that too). It was founded in 1896 serving salmon, white fish, shrimps, mussels, lobster tails, and various sauces ... all in the ability to grab a bite on the go already prepared in a window opening to the street displaying the healthy wraps, pitas, and sandwiches. Prices are cheap and affordable (ca. 1-8 Euro a sandwich or meal) or if you are sitting in, entrees for 7-25 Euro, including lobster, shrimps, and mussels not fried but delicously prepared with veggies or potatoes. Rating: 5 stars out of 5 (fast food rating). On my 3/31/09 visit, tried the special Louisiana cajun crawfish sandwich .... excellent!
In the background of the Burgplatz you can see this peculiar church tower. It belongs to the St. Lambertus church. After a closer look you will notice that the spire is all twisted. It is said that this is a result of using wet wood and when it dries it gets this kind of shape.
At the end of the moat in Königsallee you can find the sculptural group of Triton. It was placed in the beginning of the XX century, but the bulevard is a bit older: it will be celebrating its 200 aniversary in 2004.
Behind this scultural group, you can find the Hofgarten, the most important park in the centre of the city.
