Hello,
I will be traveling to Dusseldorf in October of this year. I've been trying to book a hotel room, but there is very limited availability due to a HUGE conference that week. Can anyone recommend a town or city within 50km of Dusseldorf in which to stay?

Hi Eric,
you could try the towns of Ratingen or Mettmann, both about 10 km from Düsseldorf with good connections to city, airport and roads. However, during big fairs you might not find a room here either...
Within 50 km you have Cologne for example (30 min by train), or Oberhausen, Duisburg, Mühlheim, Essen... all not too far away.

Thanks for the information Steffi. I'd rather not drive into Dusseldorf everyday. Is train travel easiest from Cologne, or do the other towns have convenient train travel to Dusseldorf.

hi eric,
that's really no problems, there are fast trains as well as the suburban trains running between the different cities, Mettmann is about 20 min for example, Ratingen maybe a little longer, Duisburg maybe 10 minutes. Most of the times these trains are even on time!
Let me know if you want to (or have time to ) go for a beer, I can show you some nice places.

The Havana in the media port is a nice spot for a warm summer night. From the terrace in front of the bar and restaurant you get nice views of the port. Cocktails (eg. the perfect Caipirinha) are nice and the food sounded wonderful as well. The terrace closes at 2 am unfortunately (but you can move in the huge and beautiful interieur of the place!) and on a busy night the service is not exactly quick and friendly. Trendy is always good in Media port places but it doesn't really matter.
The Curry I went to was in the Media Harbor near Strobe Str. and Ernst-Gnobe Str. I thought that I would have a bigger problem with the outlandish mating of 6" Wurst and a sweet red curry sauce European in it's culinary development. But low and behold I realized that if you could slather that unadventurous - yet very taste - concoction on a perfectly good sausage and it actually increased my culinary experience.
It is simple good eats. The perfectly cooked Fries helped out a great deal also. I had them with an Orangina and I chose the Garlic Mayo for my condiment. They had several "Flavored" mayos, but I thought it best to start simple.
If like me you like art you will want to visit this gallery. It is a modern design all in white with one very useful feature - the roof is all clear glass and there are plenty of windows - which means there is plenty of natural light - this aids enjoyment of the works AND allows you to take photographs of the exhibits - many galleries do not allow flash photography. There are works by the likes of Kandinsky.

I wasn't able to take a good photograph of the Stadttor due to the bright sunlight when I was there, but it is a fantastic structure. You can see the top half of it here, framed between two of the twisted Gehry office buildings. It is easily one of the most impressive buildings in the city and looks even better lit up at night than it does during the day. It reminded me a little of La Defence in Paris, only a little smaller and not quite as imposing. It is also made constructed from two glass towers, with a connecting glass attic. It was built in 1997 by architects Petzinka Pink and Partner, and in 1998 it won the object of the year award in the architecture "oscars" in Cannes.
