Visiting in March to Moviepark!

by ruoling

Hi all! I'm planning to visit MoviePark at Bottrop-Kirchellen in early April! I'm wondering if there will be lockers/shelves to place our backpacks in the park because we are planning to take a train in and out on the same day. Anyone knows or has been there before to advise?

Hi ruoling,

Yup, lockers are there. Cost 3 EUR per day.

MoviePark is a good choice, by the way. :-)

Enjoy your trip!

Sincerely,
Marcus

Travel Tips for Düsseldorf

No trip to Düsseldorf is...

by DrewV

No trip to Düsseldorf is complete without sampling the wonderful liquid joy known as Altbier. A sublime, dark, rich-as-Croesus ale, the Altbier makes lesser beers weep for mercy.

As the girls and I made our way around the Altstadt (described below), we found our way into a Diebels-serving brewpub. As we dove into our pitcher of happy, happy altbier, we noticed the crowd. Germans all, smiling and clinking mugs while cheezy American radio filtered through the smoke-filled air. Suddenly, Cher came on. That song 'Believe', which hadn't yet become overplayed. Anyway, every single German in the bar began to nod their head in unison to the music! It was like an episode of the Twilight Zone! I was waiting for Rod Sterling to jump out of the shadows. The four of us just sat staring at each other as two hundred Düsseldorfers nodded their head to Cher's quite questionable music. Then the song ended, a simliarly sappy song started, and everything returned to normal. Bizarre...

Kaiserswerth

by sabsi

Düsseldorf-Kaiserswerth is in the north of Düsseldorf at the Rhine. It's a beautiful part of town with a lovely market square, a *** restaurant, a wonderful beergarden (Burghof) and the ruins of the emperial palatinate ("Kaiserpfalz") from the 9th century. It used to be the home for Emperor Barbarossa and was destroyed in the Spanish succession war later.

Great wraps

by martin_nl about O'Reilly's

This is the place where we had lunch during the VT meet. They have anice terrace outside on Marktplatz which is as central as you can get in the Altstadt. I had a delicious wrap with corn, lettuce and chicken with tandoori herbs. Very good quality!!

In the Düsseldorf Opera House

Over the years I have seen a number of operas at the Düsseldorf Opera House, for instance Die Walküre by Richard Wagner in 2002 (with Cyndee Szymkowicz as Helmwige, by the way) and Carmen by Georges Bizet in 2003.

In 2009 I could have had free tickets for five different operas by the Czech composer Leos Janacek (1854-1928) on five consecutive evenings, but unfortunately I had to teach in Frankfurt that week so I could only come to one of them, namely Katja Kabanowa in an impressive staging by Stein Winge.

Back in 1956 the Düsseldorf and Duisburg operas were merged into one company called the Deutsche Oper am Rhein = German Opera on the Rhine. Since then, all the Düsseldorf opera productions are also shown in Duisburg, and visa versa.

Downtown Plaza

by Redlats

Düsseldorf (and most European cities) have open plazas in mid-city. Who knows the historical reasons for them, but they are good for street festivals -- like the one (International Children's Day) going on the day we visited.

Nice atmosphere, no cars, kids playing.
Our group ate at the edge of this plaza and besides talking about VT members, we watched all the activity. ;o)
