A short stay in Dusseldorf

by grahamy1952

I will be visiting Dusseldorf in December for a few days. I have not yet booked, but have seen the Hotel Sorat to the south of the city centre. Very reasonable price. I was wondering if anyone knew of this hotel, and could recomend it, or not. Is it good for visitors to access the places like the KO and the Old Town etc?
Any other places "Not to be missed"?

RE: A short stay in Dusseldorf

The Hotel is in Düsseldorf-Bilk, so you can get by Tram to Kö, Altstadt (oldtown) ect. in 15 Minutes, if you wanna go (or come back) at night, i guess Taxi-Prices will also be okay so i don't see any problem there...
Another place "not to be missed" might be the "Medienhafen". Just google for it ;)

Always depends what you're looking for?!?

Travel Tips for Düsseldorf

Stahlhof

by DanielF

This is the most impressive building in the Carlstadt area. It was built by the Steel Association in the early XX century in the historicist style characteristic of the the German second Reich.

It has played an outstanding role in the history of Germany, since it was here that the Bundesland Nordrhein-Westfalen was established in 1948, one year before the Bundesrepublik was created.

Today the Steel House hosts the administrative court of the city.

Mettmann (Mince Meat Man)

by sabsi

Mettmann is a small town in the "Bergisches Land". It's the town I work in and I normally just see the same spots here ("our" villa and the local supermarket) but there's also a lovely Market Square with a big church surrounded by cute slate buildings here. The name Mettmann is a bit funny actually as the translation would be "Mince Meat Man".

The christmas market on Mettmann's market square is one of the nicest ones I know because it is not commercialised as many others.

Near Mettmann there's the Neanderthal .... the valley where the Neanderthalers came from. There's a Neanderthal Museum here which I still have only seen from the outside.

Salad heaven

by sabsi about Mangold (Ex- CO OP)

Apparently Düsseldorfer like to open bars in old fillings stations, supermarkets etc. This bar which serves excellent pasta is in an old supermarket ! This used to be my favourite bar when it was still called Co-Op. Now it's called Mangold, it's a bit fancier and a bit more stylish but still a great place.

They serve great food here, I especially like their pasta dishes and the gorgeous salads. There are daily specials here which are mostly quite expensive and fancy. But they serve normal stuff as well. Rocket salad with churrizo and apple slices. Or the pasta with mixed vegetables and churrizo! Those were daily specials. From the permanent menu I like the salad with sweet chili turkey.

Rheinturm

by mirchica

This is the telecommunication tower of Dusseldorf. It is 240m tall and 20 years old. I know that you can climb on the top but unfortunately I didn’t do it. They say the view is great. Also the tower is famous with its biggest digital clock in the world.
