accommodation and shopping :)

by Ineshuks

1. We're going to exhibition in Dusseldorf Fair on January 2006. Could you, please, suggest us some normal hotel, hostel or guest house for good price?
2. We'll have one free day before coming back, so we would like to have some shopping in Dusseldorf (mostly we'd like to have all stuff for kids). What about some shopping areas and winter sales?

Thanks in advance for Your help!

You have to click on "-> further" for the shopping areas.
There are no offical winter sales anymore. But many shops still offer winter sales at the old dates (last January week).

i was in Dusseldorf for work last week, i suggest you stay at hotel Ibis. There is one pretty close to the train station (Hoellerstrasse) just 200 metres on the right outside the train station and it's 59 euros per room per night. Same for the other Ibis hotel close to the exhibition area, same price.

Hotel rates are dependent at the exhibition. If it is a huge exhibition, prices are getting to unpayable.

I think, best is to query the hotel-portals as www.hrs.com to get an idea about rates.

Travel Tips for Düsseldorf

Rivalry between Düsseldorf and Cologne

by BillNJ

There is a rivalry between the two neighbors on the Rhine River, Düsseldorf and Cologne, that is clearly evident in beer distribution. Although Düsseldorf is only about 30 minutes away from Cologne by train, it is very rare to see a Kölsch in Düsseldorf -- or an Altbier in Cologne. I was told that it could be dangerous to order the wrong beer in either city.

A beer down the road

by IceBear7 about Krokodil

This place is very much off the beaten path! I discovered the Crocodile about a year after I had moved to an apartment 2 minutes away from it.
In the north of Düsseldorf, nothing fancy, just a quiet place with a jukebox playing all time favorites, local food, good Altbier and friendly staff.
And they really like crocodiles: they are everywhere, in photographs, in paintings, toys, decoration of furniture and and and. In a different location you would call this a theme bar ;-)

Currywurst Bar

by sandysmith about Curry

A bar specialising in currywurst with a view of the Gehry Buildings. Well it has to be a currywurst of course -a variety of sauces to go with it - I had the piquant sauce with a handful of Dave's chips and washed it down with an Alt bier :-)

Notice the Statue of Jan-Wellem

by DanielF

The riding statue of Prince-elector Johann-Willem of Palatinate-Neuburg, known by Duesseldorfers as Jan-Wellem has presided the Market Place since the XVIII century.

Under Jan-Wellem, the city knew a period of prosperity and splendor and special attention was paid to the arts. The prince-elector was an art-lover himself and gathered an important painting collection, including several works by Rubens which are now exhibited in the Munich Alte Pinakothek.

Apparently, it was his own decision that the city should honour him with a statue for the years to come, but, according to legend, when the artist run out of material to build it, the citizens of Düsseldorf brought their silver cutlery so that it could be completed.

Triton on the Kö

by Mariajoy

Along Königsallee there is an elaborate sculpture/fountain dedicated to Triton - the God of the Sea. It looks a little too large for this smallish stretch of water but it was getting a lot of attention from tourists and ducks!!

The link is pretty good - one of those 360 panormas of the fountain and the area around it.
