Renting/Hiring a Car Child Seat for 3 days
by hellothere2008
Hi,
We are hiring a car from Dusseldorf to Switzerland. But car company charges e-40 for a child seat. Is there a way we could rent a child seat for much cheaper price for 3 days in Dusseldorf/Weeze Airport?

Check with different car rental companies, as the prices are bound to vary. We ran into a similar problem when our daughters were much younger and found that car seat remtal prices varied a lot. Daily fees for some companies were weekly fees for others.
Travel Tips for Düsseldorf
Düsseldorf on-line

Düsseldorf is the business centre of this region. It is a classic German business and historical city. What ever you can find in Germany, I guess you can find it also in Dusseldorf

Adult Education Center (VHS)
by Nemorino
Like any other self-respecting German city, Düsseldorf has a comprehensive Adult Education Center (VHS) with a full selection of courses in languages, social sciences, culture, vocational training and much more.
An unusual feature of the VHS in Düsseldorf is that they have a great location right behind the main railroad station. In earlier years I used to come here on business sometimes, and I have just seen from their website that after all this time they are still using our series of textbooks for their English courses -- bravo!

Trains to Düsseldorf
by Nemorino

3. The Loreley and the Rhine River from the train on the old route.
The fastest trains between Frankfurt am Main and Düsseldorf are the third generation InterCityExpress (ICE) trains on the new high-speed rail line. A few of these trains make the journey in less than an hour and a half because they stop only at Frankfurt Airport and at Köln-Deutz. But most of the connections are about twenty minutes longer because they take a long loop around the city of Cologne so as to stop at Cologne Main Station.
A slower but nicer way to go is along the old Rhine River route (also by train, of course) by way of Mainz, Koblenz and Bonn.
Heinrich Heine's most famous poem is about one of the landmarks on this route, the Loreley (third photo), which is a big chunk of rock that is in the way of the Rhine River and forces the river to flow around it in a sharp loop.
Actually Heine's poem is about the legend of the Loreley, which has to do with a lovely maiden who sat on the rock combing her lovely golden hair and singing so beautifully that the captains of the river boats forgot to concentrate on their steering and crashed their boats against the rock.
This poem has been set to music several times, and to this day if you take a boat trip along the Rhine you can hear Japanese tourists singing it on deck as they pass the Loreley.
Another legend, which has never been proven and may not even be true, has to do with what happened to this poem during the 1930s and 40s while the Nazis were in power. Since Heine was Jewish his writings were of course banned (and burned) by the Nazis, but allegedly his Loreley poem was so popular that even the Nazis left it in the anthologies and just took his name off of it, claiming it was by an unknown German poet.
My favourite sandwich
by sabsi about Minol
This place is a fancy bar full of hip looking people in the media port area of town. They serve great food here as well as drinks! Panini Chili Turkey - very tasty and hot sandwich with turkey breast covered in hot Asian style chili sauce!
For boys of all ages...

The Rhine is one major river, and thousands and thousands of tons of various 'stuff' is transported along it's length during the year.
You normally can't talk about flat bottomed things with large hooters on VT, but here is the exception that proves the rule. A wander out to the extensive promenade by the river in Dusseldorf usually means you can view half a dozen river barges chugging up or down.
The size of these monsters is always impressive, but little boys seem to be delighted by seeing these Leviathans pass by. Even more so if a wave to the captain results a low loud groan on the ship's hooter.
