Smoking in bars

by WorthyCandidate

Is smoking permitted in Dusseldorf?

Any information gratefully received.

Re: Smoking in bars

by Ina08

As a general rule smoking is not allowed. The premises however are free to arrange for a smoking room or, in case of a private event, the rules say that it is allowed to smoke in the main area.
Bars with a surface of less than 75 sqm are exempted and smoking is allowed.

The general policy in Germany is: outside! But the law is quite difficult and thus there are smaller bars, which do not sale food, may allow guests, to smoke inside. Also bigger places may offer a separate room, where smoking is permitted. The other alternative is a "private club". You have to be member (easy; just an adress and a signature)and smoking is allowed in such bars.
Stroll around the "Altstadt" in Düsseldorf and you might find a place. Personally I have not been there for quite a while thus cannot recommend a specific place.

Enjoy your trip.

I just came back from Dusseldorf, and I will say that I don't recall seeing a single person smoking in public. Definitely not in restaurants!

By the way - if you want ideas on what to do in the area - check out my site shuweb.com and see our latest trip report!

Travel Tips for Düsseldorf

Cartwheel Fountain

by sandysmith

I always love to see the monuments in cities and I found Dusseldorf's Radschläger (Cartwheel Fountain) especially enchanting.
It was erected in 1954 by Alfred Zschorsch in the middle of Burgplatz. This lovely fountain is a throw back to days when the youth of Dusseldorf used to cartwheel in front of spectators, who would then throw them a few pennies as a reward for their efforts.

Play Boule!

by sabsi

A fun sport! Boule players are all very friendly and the let you join them even if you are a beginner! I started a few weeks ago and love it! 3 silver balls and some wine to produce a "French atmosphere"

Tramway...

by steventilly

The tram system is fast and efficient and covers the majority of the city area. They don't run till REALLY late though and the service ends shortly after midnight.
You can buy a day ticket that covers a group of people for only about 6 euro, which is good value.
There is a mix of old and more modern trams on the system, but all are clean and comfortable, and (it seems) safe to use, even at night.

Schumacher bräu

by Gili_S about Schumacher bräu

Schumacher bräu is another of those places in the old city where you just have to stand by the door and the beer is coming. As long as it in nice weather outside you can be sure there will be nice to be in the terrace here.

Visit the Mediahafen (Media Port)

by BillNJ

Another popular area of Düsseldorf is the Mediahafen (Media Port). It is a nice area to look at the water and the many boats. In this area, there are also buildings designed by famous modern architects like Frank Gehry. Personally, I don't like the architecture of Frank Gehry -- but I've saved that rant for another tip in the Warnings and Dangers section.

Walking with VTers Sabs and Thomas, I did find one building in the Media Port that I like -- the restaurant Curry which serves excellent currywurst and fries! In the restaurants section, I have included a tip on this place.
