there is a walmart (nürnberger strasse40) and you can find the supermarket chain "otto mess" everywhere. otherwise just pop into town and you´ll find anything you want. good luck!

i dont know if they have aldi markets in düsseldorf really but they are pretty much all over germany that i have seen. they have more limited selection of some things but they are usually the most inexpensive markets.

If possible (freelancer, enterpreneur) get the METRO Card and buy there. Freshest and cheapst fish of town is in Lessingstraße.

IMO most German supermarkets suck. Competition here is so fierce that quality suffers a lot. When I go to a Tesco in GB or a Foetex in Denmark, the difference is really shocking. Especially in the vegetable/fruit departments.

Travel Tips for Düsseldorf

Souterrain Cinema

by sabsi

Souterrain Cinema is the nicest cinema I have ever seen. OK it's no big screen and no 'big' sound there but it's unique. To find it you have to go to Cafe Muggel in D-Oberkassel (Dominikanerstrasse 4) and downstairs you will find the cinema. It's basically a few chairs, tables, a bar and a screen. You can smoke during the film and there is a break because they have to change the film rolls. I love this place!

My favourite Alt

by sabsi about Schluessel

This huge brewpub in the old town offers great fruity altbier (my favourite!) and a nice brewpub atmosphere - outside and inside! I especially love the mixture of old and young, rich and poor in these places! And the fried potatoes are to die for!!! Come as you are.

zum Schlüssel Coaster

by Gili_S about zum Schlüssel

Besides being excellent restaurant this place also has its own brewery of AltBier inside the restaurant. In the summer places outside are very crowded but service is quick and you will never really have to wait for your new fresh glass of AltBier. The Schnitzel & the beer of course.

Königsalle

by mirchica

Probably the most popular street in Dusseldorf. In the middle there is a channel and beautiful bridges over it. At one of it ends there is a fountain. The boulevard is famous with its shops. Actually this is the place where people go shopping; there isn’t anything you can’t find here.

K20 Kunstsammlung NRW

by antistar

A work of architectural art in itself, the K20 Kunstsammlung NRW also contains a contains a large collection of artwork of its own. Starting in 1960 the state government bought a collection by the painter Paul Klee, and added to that a great number of post-war works, including examples from Abstract Expressionism and Cubism. There are also plenty of other pieces of art in the collection, and not just post-war, like Bauhaus, Dadaist and Surrealist works. Along with Klee there are works from the likes of Matisse, Picasso and Pollock. The collection is also augmented by numerous special exhibitions, such as Rebecca Horn's Bodylandscapes when I visited.

Opening Times

Tue-Sun 10am-6pm
On weekends opens an hour later in the morning, and on Wednesdays it closes later at 10pm.

Entry: €6.50 adults (free after 6pm on Wednesdays).

The K20 is twinned with the K21 art collection across the other side of town and you can buy a kombi-ticket that gives entry to both for €10.
