From Dortmund to Duisburg by water

by smitbet

From my not-so-good map, it looks like I can kayak from the end of the Dortmund-Ems Kanal to Duisburg. If this is so, then I would like to travel up the Rhein. Is the current from Duisburg to the Main swift? By swift, I mean would it be greater than 4knots? Is there a portion of the Rhein on that stretch that is requlated by schluses? Where would I find this information? Any feedback would certainly be appreciated.

Between Duisburg and Bonn 3-4 knots are normal.
In the (narrow) Middle Rhine Valley the current can reach 8-10 knots.

Thanks! It looks like I'll have to go in the opposite direction or forget it!

Travel Tips for Duisburg

Landschaftspark Nord

by sabsi

Landschaftpark Nord is a huge park on the grounds of a former ironworks. Here you can walk around for hours just looking at old factory buildings and wild nature. On weekend evenings the main buildings are illuminated which is really nice as well!

Botanical Gardens on the Kaiserberg

by Weissdorn

Near the University of Duisburg on the Kaiserberg, they have some lovely botanical gardens. The gardens have been here since 1890, and are around 195 hectars, with a garden section, an herbal garden, a national plant bed, an ecological section, and even rare plants and flowers from the Alps and the dunes. There is no charge for visiting the garden yourself. If you want a guided tour, you should call the number below. The gardens are open everyday all year long from 8 a.m. until sunset. The best time to visit the gardens is in May.

The City Hall

by challenger

One of the most interesting aspects of Duisburg’s city hall is its “Paternoster”. Walk inside it and you will see one of the few surviving, functioning examples of this kind of early lift system around. The Paternoster is constantly moving up and down and you’ll have to simply jump on and off at the right moment. As a kid it took me a few years to gain the courage to sneak in and drive further than the top floor. Would the whole thing be turned upside down? Would I be shaken around when the upward moving Paternoster finally goes into descent mode again? Well, as you can guess the answer was far more prosaic in the end….. Go and check it out yourself!

Duisburg...where the whales live....

by belgianchocolate

Duisburg is a city in the center of the 'ruhrgebied'. Therefor it is also well-known for its industry. Last visit we went to the city and in my opinion there isn't much to see. At the time we where there , a handcraft market took place in the center. You know , such an occasion where people dress up in traditionally clothing and in Germany eat lots of sausages (since it is the national dish there - in different sizes) and show of their homemade art. (we did had a good laugh).
The center is modern , with most of the time ugly buildings. It has no hart and only a few ancient buildings left - religious mostly.
BUT - now comes the good part - except for the landschaftspark (see other pagemakers) it has a zoo....
