Travel Tips for Duisburg
Modern Art Stroll
by Weissdorn
Duisburg is a patron city of modern art. Among the more interesting sculptures to see is this huge fountain in the middle of the city by Niki de Saint Phalle, or Catherine Marie-Agnés Fal de Saint Phalle, daughter of a French banker and an American. The colourful fountain is called the "Oiseau amoureux Fountain". The Duisburgers cover their mouths when they say "the Birdman doing a fat chick". You can see a number of modern sculptures without paying anything in the pedestrian zone in downtown Duisburg, or in the Immanuel Kant Park nearby, where the Lehmbruck Museum is located.
The river Emscher
by sabsi
The Emscher, the river that runs through the Landschaftspark Nord used to be the dirtiest river in Germany. Now with less industry in the Ruhr area around it's clean again. So clean that reflexion pictures are possible again!
Life Saver
by Sjalen
The giant sculpture people either hate or love, Life Saver was created by Niki de Saint-Phalle in 1991 and stands in a fountain. Personally, I love it as reminds me of my Stockholm childhood which was full of similar painted polyester art. I also think it is placed in an excellent position in quite a grey part of the city centre which is cheered up considerably by the colours of this giant bird with its fascinating talons.

""Landschaftspark Nord""
The areal of an old blast-furnace is now one of the highlights of the Industrial Culture Route. This route is stretched throughout the whole "Ruhrgebiet", many old mines and other industrial areas has been opened to the public. Some of them are still in their original way, as the blast-furnace in Duisburg. I found it really interesting and it´s a great place to take photographs as well...
""Innenhafen""
Duisburg also has the biggest inland port of the world... On my last visit in Düsseldorf Sabs and I had a look at this area. We took a cruise through the port and afterwards we had a look into the old "Innenhafen", which has been formed into a cultural centre these days with many restaurants etc.... Unfortuantely we didn´t have enough time to explore everything so we have to come back another time...when the weather is better :)
"Travelogues"
Many pics of these unusual sights are in my travelogues on this page.... Have a look if you are interested.....
