If Essen has something like a concentrated nightlife at all, I would search it in Rüttenscheid. There you have several restaurants and pubs, the unique 'Galerie Cinema' where you can watch OVs every night (except on Mondays), you have the Girardet House, where a nice Irish Pub (Fritzpatrick's) is and you might get a real parking problem...
