Museum Folkwang
by Kathrin_E
Museum Folkwang is one of the leading museums in Germany for late 19th and 20th century and contemporary art. Their new museum building has only been opened in spring 2010. The halls and passages are wide, spatious and well lit, mostly with natural daylight. Paintings and sculptures have lots of room around them.
The collection of late 19th/early 20th century paintings is what I enjoyed most. All the 'big names' of impressionism, expressionism, classical modern are there: van Gogh, Monet, Rodin, Marc, Kandinsky, Lehmbruck, Kirchner, Feininger... The Folkwang owns world famous art works. In almost every room my jaw dropped - ahhh, THIS is here - oooooh, they have THAT ONE, too... paintings and sculptures I knew from books, calendars, or even postage stamps like the one in honour of Franz Marc in the first picture.
All details and up to date information concerning temporary and permanent exhibitions, opening hours, entrance fees etc. can be found on the museum website (in English).
How to get there: U 11 or tram 107 to "Rüttenscheider Stern", then follow the signs, the walk is about 7-8 minutes.
From the train station, your best bet is the direct shuttle bus that departs by the back entrance of the train station, follow the signs "Museum Folkwang" within the station.
Münster Essen
by evilboomer
An old Church where you can see the golden Holy Mary in the treasury. I never visited it but one day I will do it.
You can see the treasury from Tuesday to Saturday between 10 and 17 p.m., but you have to call them and announce yourself for the tour through the treasury.

"Zollverein"
For all of you who like old stories about mining etc....It´s an UNESCO world heritage site and a must for all architectural freaks as well! I definately have to come back and visit the other parts of this huge areal.....
"Margarethenhöhe"
A wonderful living area these days.... Build by Margarethe Krupp, member of the famous Krupp dynasty here in Essen, for all the Krupp workers. They were allowed to live here for free after they´d retired from work. It has been one of the first social programms in industrial work they say.....
For you German readers: I love the street names like "Trautes Heim" and "Schön gelegen".....
