Essen to Amsterdam is different though if Sabsi is driving.

I've heard the trip is only about 93 minutes with her at the wheel.

It is 208 according to Opel route planner.
http://www.europe.opel.com/vicinity/waydrive

As Sunday, at list in Germany I think it is trucks free on the autobahn, maybe you should be able to make it in 2.5 hours. Just be sure to write down the autobahns numbers and especially the exit number to Essen as there are few and it will be easy to miss the one that you need.

Travel Tips for Essen

Kletterpütt

by IceBear7

This is where my new passion for indoor climbing started: the climbing hall in the old mining building Zeche Helene.

They have great climbing routes in all categories, for absolute beginners as wells as pros.

Height: 14 meters

Our instructor was really nice and competent, some theory as well as climbing.

Oh, and you can also do abseiling, which is great once you've taken your heart to do it. Everything in good condition.
Entrance: 9 Euro during the week, 10 on weekends, less for DAV members, students and kids.

Shoes: 2,50 Euro
Belt: 2 Euro

Eis Casal, Mörchens Eis,...

by evilboomer

Eis Casal, Mörchens Eis, Plückthun Eis Do you like Icecream?? Than I have three good Icecafes for you here in Essen you have to visit.
I visit very often Eis Casal in Frohnhausen, because I lived there awhile and I really love to eat the italian good icecream.

The second one is in Rüttenscheid and is called Mörchens Eis and some say there you get the second best ice in Essen.

The best Ice you get at Plückthun in Kupferdreh. And at Plückthun the icecream is marvelous I think. The best here in Essen. Very creamy!!!

Domschatzkammer - Treasure Chamber

by Kathrin_E

The treasure chamber of the cathedral contains the precious art works and liturgical devices that are now owned by the bishopric and the cathedral chapter. The core of this collection is the medieval treasure of the convent of canonesses. Medieval church art of highest quality, with pieces that are more than 1000 years old. Amazing and well worth seeing.

The treasure chamber has always been located in a building by the southern transept of the church. After the destructions in World War II a new building has been erected in the same spot. The finest pieces of the treasure are on display in a modern museum architecture over three floors.

The finest is easily missed: the Ottonic crosses with their elaborate emamels are in the basement, and the staircase down is hidden behind the back wall of the entrance hall. Museum staff are aware of this problem, they show everyone the way.

Opening hours: Mon - Sat 10:00-17:00, Sun 11:30-17:00
Entrance fee: adults 5 €
Strictly no photography inside!

Marktkirche - Market Church and the Blue Chapel

by Kathrin_E

The little church is ocated in the very heart of downtown Essen, a few steps further down Kettwiger Straße from the Dom. It almost disappears among the much larger post-war shop and office buildings.

In recent years it received a new chapel opposite the main altar which is a spectacular sight: It is entirely built from opaque blue glass.

The church is open in the daytime. During my visit there was an exhibition of paintings inside.
