hi
we want to go to the Essen meeting by car.
we find out it is about 2.30 to drive to the centre.
what is the best way to park our car and what are the prices.
diana
I do not think parking will be a problem on Sunday morning as long as the stores still closed in Germany on Sundays. I am sure you will find a place easily, but just in case you did not, just drive one km further to the university area and you will be fine. (Free of course)

A Korean restaurant and the one where my family traditionally goes to celebrate birthdays, successfully passed exams, wedding anniversaries and to impress guests of our humble house ;oP
They have nice fishisssss in the aquarium... and this restaurant is really well-known around here. A lot of relatives and friends also use it as their formal celebration venue - you gotta book ahead, it can get rather crowded. I even saw Jean Pütz there once. Ever heard of him? Pretty famous tv-moderator from Cologne ('Chärchzlisch willkommen zu de Chobbytekk!'). Everything I've had so far was very good - and I've had a lot... The pleasure starts with the kroepoek (shrimp crackers), then goes on with whatever you choose for starters, say spring rolls or wan tan-soup; the main dish could be duck or chicken or rice or noodles with shrimps or egg or *ponders* other stuff... I recommend the crispy versions and I recommend peanut sauce.
There are guided tours available at Zollverein pit. These demonstrate the way the coal used to go very well. An excellent way to get a feeling for the history of this place. The tour takes your through several buildings you wouldn't get access to on your own.
At weekends they start at the visitors centre at 1100, 1300, 1400, 1500 and 1600. During the week in summer there's tours at 1100, 1400 and 1500 (in winter only at 1400). The tour takes approx. 2 hours and costs EURO 7. English tours are available on request.
Spend a day in the Grugapark (GRUGA = Große Ruhrländische-Gartenbauausstellung = Big Ruhrarea-Gardening Exhibition).
The park was created in 1929 and covers 700.000 square metres of Essen's grounds. Apart from big big green meadows surrounded by sometimes very old, sometimes very exotic trees, it also has a zoo (with mighty eagles and gentle butterflies), a garden area in which several landscapes and climates are imitated, a bonsai-gallery (that I love!!!), a rhododendron-valley (that I also love!), some places to play and meddle with water and sand and stuff, restaurants of course, toilets... :oD, I'm running out of features, didcha notice? ;oP... oh, there's also an open air stage... and the park-train... I aaalways wanted to ride it as a wee kid! Parents, beware!
... one of my most favorite cities in the Rhine-Ruhr Area. The city greats arriving passengers at the main train terminal with a view to the Mövenpick Hotel which carries the neon signs: "Essen - The Shopping City".
Presently still too cold to sit outside, but the beautiful balcony/terrace on the first floor of the hotel invites to chat over some cool drinks during sunny days or warm summer nights.
After desolving the Holy Roman Empire of German Nation in 1806 the city of Essen became Prussian territory in 1813.
The Krupp steel factory in Essen was the biggest steel factory in the world in 1887.
Emperor Wilhelm I. came to visit Essen in 1896 and in 1898 the city unveiled this monument in honor of the Emperor at the same place where it stands today - The Burgplatz
Adjacent to the Monument of Emperor Wilhelm I a further landmark at the Brugplatz is the Cathedral of Essen. In the background a modern industrial building.
See more about it under Travellog Cathedral of Essen.
