Member meeting in Essen at November 23rd
by hundertmorgen
Hello!
I'm planning a meeting in Essen. Who wants to join us? We ll be waiting for all of you!
Schedule:
Meeting point is CAFE SOLO at 11:00 am for breakfast.
Adress: CAFE SOLO, Kettwiger Str. 36, Essen City (3 minutes to walk from Central Station)
Then around 01:00 am our plan is to go to the ZECHE ZOLLVEREIN
(www.zeche-zollverein.de).
Here we can visit the ESSENER-SLIDE-SHOW-FESTIVAL
(www.weltblicke.de), four different photo presentations about different countries and journeys (90 min. each).
Other possibilities at Zeche Zollverein are visiting the DESIGN MUSEUM NRW (www.red-dot.de) or to walk around and watch the area.
In the late afternoon we can go back to the city to have some food and drinks at the CHRISTMAS MARKET. Here another highlight from Essen is waiting for you - the 54th ESSENER LIGHTSHOW (www.lichtwochen.essen.de) - Motto this year: Finland !!!
At least, before the day ends we can have some more drinks in a pub - maybe in my favorite one DE PRINS - Het Bruine Cafe (www.deprins.de)
Now, let me know that you come over to join the meeting.... ;-) Watch the Meeting Calendar)
Greetings from Essen
Sandra

Sandra,
Just checked but it'll take me almost 4 hours to get to Dusseldorf on saturdau (not that that matters that much) and almost the same amount of time to get to Den Bosch on sunday. And since i have to be there on time due to that dinner engagement i would hav eto leave before 1 on sunday. All in all, that is a bit too much..
Hopefully next time and i'm sure you all will have a great time

Travel Tips for Essen
Crazy Golf at Baldeneysee
by sabsi
As soon as spring is there I normally love to go and play crazy golf ... or as we call it "Minigolf". There is an old minigolf course at Baldeneysee and as it's the only one I know in this area we went here as soon as spring 2003 arrived with 20C in March. Of course we weren't the only ones, everybody seemed to have had the same idea ;-) All you need it €2,50. The rest you will get there. Oh, and on a sunny day bring some time, you will have to wait quite a lot!
DAMPFBIERBRAUEREI aka Dampfe
by Bagillbaer about Dampfbierbrauerei
All in all very big building - coming with a group of four? Book a table in the restaurant. Coming with a group of several dozens? Book a whole room.
The styling is equivalent to the food - somewhere between sophisticated and rustic. Not sure - have been there two times so far, always with business colleagues. This is the place to organize your after work meeting, somewhere between a sophisticated dinner and the typical Ruhrpott plain fare. And beer, never forget the beer. As the 'Dampfe' is a Brauerei (= a brewery), they have their own beer, quite good too, but I'm not exactly one for beer. Save it is Guinness, Murphy's or Köstritzer... in other words, dark and malty. The Dampfe beer is rather dark too, but not black. I'm sure they have a special term for it, but don't ask me!
Visit the Zollverein Coal Mine Industrial Complex
by BillNJ
My guide, VTer Daniela (mickybleck), was going to take me to the Zollverein Coal Mine Industrial Complex in Essen. Unfortunately, on the day of my visit, all of the roads to the coal mine were closed due to a marathon race through the city (see my Warnings and Dangers tip).
The Zollverein Coal Mine Industrial Complex has been designated as a UNESCO World Heritage site. Included with this tip is a link to the complex's official website. Daniela and other VTers have told me that it is a great place to visit.
Werdener Open Air
by evilboomer
In the middle of May there is a free Open Air at the River Ruhr in the wonderful district Werden, here in Essen. You don't have to pay for it except for drinking and food.
There are a bunch of good bands who play so many styles of music, Punk, Jazz, Reggea, Pop and Rock. You will have great fun there, especially when the sun is shining and you can sit on the grass.
Also you can see so many people and meet many.
Essen, die Einkaufsstadt

As you get out from the main entrance of the main train station, this is what you find. A big building with a big rotul which say:
"Essen die Einkaufsstadt"
