Maritim Hotel Gelsenkirchen
A few shortcomings
We chose this hotel on the recommendation of a friend, and because they were offering a package with tickets to the football tournament we had come to see (a friendly involving Newcastle United, West Ham, Malaga and of course Schalke). We had a good-sized room on the third floor with a balcony but nothing special in the way of a view (some rooms overlook the nearby park – we had a side view of the trees). The room had most of the usual facilities you would expect – mini-bar, TV, hair dryer, etc. I felt though that at these prices wifi should have been free rather than a paid-for service (€4.99 per 24 hour period). And with the weather very hot during our August visit, we thought air-conditioning too would be expected of a hotel in this price category. As it was, our room was very hot and stuffy, and leaving the window open meant a lot of noise at times, as a railway line runs right next to the hotel.
Breakfast was not included in our room rate and was a pricey €18 per person. But for that you do get an excellent buffet with just about anything you might expect - fresh fruit and dried fruits; yoghurts, cereals and Bircher muesli; a wide variety of cheeses and cold meats; different spreads, jams and honey; hot dishes such as sausages and eggs; several different breads and rolls; sweet pastries and muffins. There was a choice of four fruit juices and coffee was topped up regularly, though for my taste could have been stronger. The pleasant restaurant room overlooks the park, as does the pub terrace below where we enjoyed some drinks with our friends on our first evening here.
Directions: About a 10 minute walk from the main station but a little confusing if you don’t know the city, so best to take a tram (#107) or taxi – we paid about €6 for the latter.
Centrally located in the heart of Gelsenkirchen
This hotel is built at the "Stadtpark" (city park). I attended an international conference. The meeting rooms are excellent and the food served during the lunch break was very tasty as well at moderate prices.
Due to the vicinity to other cities such as Bochum (ideally for Musicals such as Star Dust) or Dortmund (Soccer stadium, prsently World championship) this hotel is an alternative, if you are prepared to drive a bit.
Unique Quality: I love the quiet location at the park, where a quick walk can give you enough relaxation after a busy day or during conference breaks
Directions: Take exit "Schalke" on Autobahn 42 (Interstate) and follow the sign to the centre of the city
