"Carneval (Mardi Gras)"
In Germany Mardi Gras ('Fasching') is also referred to as the 5th and foolish season ('die närrische Zeit').
""Fools" Have Fun Watching the Parade"
It is a time of elaborate parades, masks, balls and election of Carnival king and queen and official madness.
"Former "Princess" - Fools"
The exact time of celebration and the traditions vary from county to county, but it generally takes place in early spring, unsually 6 weeks prior to Easter holidays
"Capitals of Main Activity"
Düsseldorf, Munich, Cologne and Mainz are strongholds of Mardi Gras celebrations, though almost each smaller city along the river Rhine have their own attractions usually on the Sunday prior to "Rosenmontag"
"From the Mayor's House"
Some people take it very seriously. The chief "Fools" dressed up in tuxedo and black tie with the "Fools-Cap" acting as commentators from the House of the Mayor
"What is he thinking"
On duty - damn - no alcohol - can't be with them - crazy fools - got to wait until the parade is finished - luckily nothing to do - all in best order.
By the way - Germany's police men ride BMW with the famous Boxwer-engine
"Time to Celebrate"
In the houses along the parades is party time. Dressed up in costumes everybody is happy and enjoys the peak of "foolishness" during the 3 foolish days on Thursday, Sunday and Monday until everything will be normal again on Ash Wensday, when Catholics get their reminder to return to ashes.... and dust!
"Going back Home"
Grandpa, father and children on their way home. This family came about 20 km by train to see the parade. Grandpa was very nice talking to when I asked to have permission to publish the pictures on VT
