Travel Tips for Münster

Kiepenkerl

by MichaelFalk1969

The "Kiepenkerl", a nice witty fellow clad in a blue skirt typical for the Münster region. In former times, they were smalltown tradesmen, wandering from town to town and selling goods from their backpack (called "Kiepe").

Catholic Academy Franz-Hitze-Haus

by Kathrin_E

The Catholic Academy does conventions, seminars etc. about almost any topic that is in the widest sense connected with Christian faith - see the website for the current programme. I have been three times, always in September for the study week on art history and theology which takes place every year. The house provides accommodation and meals for the participants and the atmosphere is very pleasant, friendly and familiar.
Language skills in German are needed.

Address: Kardinal-von-Galen-Ring 50 (west of the city centre, not far from Aasee)

A play at the City Theater

4. Program booklet for the play Unter Eis by Falk Richter (see the next tip for an explanation of the background photo)

At the Münster City Theater I also saw a play: Unter Eis (Under Ice) by Falk Richter, a German playwright who also stages operas -- he was the stage director for the Frankfurt production of Elektra, by Richard Strauss, for example.

The play Unter Eis is about consultants, people who are paid to visit business companies and other organizations and advise them about how they could reorganize themselves to become more efficient. This usually means firing some of the employees and putting more pressure on the rest.

Before I retired I had dealings with consultants on several occasions, so I can confirm that Falk Richter has captured exactly the way these people think and talk -- but compressed into one hundred minutes, so they sound even more grotesque on stage than in real life.

Did I say on stage??

In Münster they didn't perform it on a stage, but in the theater café, where we forty spectators sat at tables arranged in a long rectangle, as at a business meeting. Two of the actors sat with us at the tables, initially, and the other two were at the two ends of the room.

German consultants tend to use lots of English-language jargon when they speak, so the program booklet includes a glossary to explain such terms as BCG, bootcamp, bottom line-effect, case study, coach, core values, entrepreneurial spirit, life-master-plan, point of aggression, personal effectiveness, pressure handling, senior consultant, etc.

Unter Eis has also been made into an opera, but I unfortunately missed it when it was performed in Frankfurt recently, so I was very glad that I could at least see the play in Münster.

Cathedral interiors

by Kuznetsov_Sergey

There is a 5-meter statue of Sacred Christopher, the heavenly patron of travelers in an interior of the cathedral.

Necessarily pay attention to confessing cells - they are carved, wooden, polished, very appreciable, - local woodcarvers were famous across Germany. There are tombs of numerous bishops inside the Cathedral.

The "Wiedertäufer"-cages - Lamberti Church

by MichaelFalk1969

The cages where used to display the remains of three leaders of a rebellious sect which took over power in Münster for a short time in the late middle ages. This must have been a gory spectacle, a true feast for crows.
