Travel Tips for Soest

Soest's marvelous Christmas Market

by MD2nd

Lovingly decorated stalls of the Christmas Market are picturesquely situated between the imposing green sandstone churches and the historical half-timbered houses. There is a daily stage program with Christmas related performances. Senior citizens read fairy tales to children, a Christmas Angel opens door of the day of the large Advent calendar, and a trumpet player climbs the steps to the church tower each evening to play familiar carols, and a Westphalian nativity scene can be admired in the Cathedral of Saint Patroclus.

Dam Busters

by SceneE.R.A

unknown to a few, Soest is the scene of the famous WW II Dam Busters! A short journey outside of the town lies the holiday resort 'Mohnesee' which apart from having extremely nice lakes and surroindings also features architecture that was directly affected in WW II.

a great venue for a day out in Soest in the summer.

Soest

The first I like to say about Soest (about 50.000 inhabitants) is the fact that this lovely city has the most marvelous Christmas Market of all Christmas Markets I've been to! No matter what one is feeling like, strolling over Soest's Christmas Market does nothing but putting a huge smile on one's face.

To me the most marvelous, most recommendable Christmas Markets, are:

1) Soest's Christmas Market
2) Rinteln's Christmas Market
3) Bueckeburg's Christmas Market
4) Osnabrueck's Christmas Market
5) Hoexter's Christmas Market

To me those Christmas Markets I suggest to be better avoid, are:

1) Potsdam's Christmas Market
2) Frankfurt's (at Main River) Christmas Market
3) Hannover's Christmas Market

All of'em 3 above are way too commercial, and don't
deserve the name Christmas (Market) to my eyes.

The old Westphalian town Soest lies on the northern edge of Sauerland. It has beautiful churches, many half-timbered houses, gothic buildings, and an almost completely preserved ring of town wall, which I found is the main part of Soest's beauty - a former fortification.

Soest has the oldest charter of municipal rights in Germany (c. 1120)

"back to the middle ages"

Come and visit my beautiful hometown! Soest dates from the Middle Ages. The old town is still in very good condition although it was badly destroyed in the second world war. half-timbered houses and lots old churches decorate the town.
