Travel Tips for Winterberg

The Winterberg Skicarroussel

by Pavlik_NL

Winterberg has within the Sauerland by far the best possibilities for skiing. Around the highest mountain of this German middle-mountainarea, one find several skipistons and very good facilities (enlarge the skimap).
For ski-cross-country Winterberg offers more then 100 kilometres in prepared tracks that lead through a truely beautiful landscape. The laughs we had in our group, though almost everything went wrong and we even lost the way and had to return to the village through deepsnow without any tracks!

Wintercloths and snowchains

by Pavlik_NL

Wintercloths as it can be colder then you think in the Sauerland. The humidity is here often somewhat higher and the wind stronger, so the feelingtemperatures can drop further then in the Alps. Always take enough films. The humidity has one positive side. In the morningmist trees, bushes and everything gets a nice white powdery layer that makes awesome pictures (see Willingen-page). Snowchians look not necessary, but believe me that you prefer to have them with you and not use, then to get stuck in a blizard (my sister needed them even this year).

Don't forget the little place itself.

by Pavlik_NL

With all this massive skiing and ski-cross-country attractions one should almost forget the place itself. Winterberg is a nice pictoresk German villages with it's characteristic "Fachwerk-hauser" (houses with these wooden structures in the walls). After having skied or any other fun in the snow, choose a place in the village to drink or eat something and before hopping back in the car ... make a little "spaziergang" (walk). The village of Winterberg is worth it.

Winterberg, the name stand for wintersports

"Centre of Sauerland in wintertime"

Winterberg found me being in first contact with ski's. With our class of the MEAO (progressed school for economical and administrative education) we went there by bus. Me and a group of friends (Carolien, Renee, Ingrid, Kor and Ron) went to see if we could do ski-cross-country. We had a totall freaky day with an enormous amount of falling and getting up again. As soon as we were going downhill, troubles arose as breaking was not a thing we learned. It even lead once to a first ski-highjump (-: on top of one another.
