Travel Tips for Bad Neuenahr-Ahrweiler

BROHL: Brohltalbahn - Historical Train

by Kathrin_E

The Brohltalbahn, aka Vulkan-Express, departs from Brohl on the Rhine and follows the Brohl river up to Engeln. The narrow-gauge railway is operated by a private club and runs only on weekends. Details and timetable on the website.

Passengers need some patience because the 18 kms ride takes one and a half hours, and the same back again. I would not recommend it to families with small kids because the ride may become boring after a while (at least pack a book or a toy).

The train takes you through the forests of the narrow valley past several small villages up to the extinct volcanoes of the Eifel mountains. For geologists and anyone interested in volcanoes, exploring the nature reserve up there (Geopark Vulkanland Eifel) will be interesting.

Drinks, sausages and schnaps will be on sale from the bar counter on board during the ride. A Engeln, there is food (very basic) available at the train station - calling the place a restaurant would mean overrating it. Better than nothing, though. The train stays in Engeln for about an hour before it returns to Brohl. There isn't much more to do there, in fact, than queueing for a Bratwurst or a coffee and queueing for the toilet, which easily keeps you busy for an hour.

Check my Brohltalbahn travelogue for more pictures.

We went on Easter. The train stopped at a tiny village a few kms before Engeln. People looked out of the windows... and suddenly everyone jumped off the train. The Easter Bunny had been there. Everywhere in the grass, Easter eggs were hidden! (Yes the train did wait...)

ALTENAHR: A Walk Along the River

by Kathrin_E

The valley of the river Ahr, which is wide and lovely around Bad Neuenahr-Ahrweiler, turns into a steep gorge if you go further upstream. At Altenahr it is almost canyon-like. There is a smooth paved bike&hike path on both sides of the river which allows an easy walk.
