Travel Tips for Bernkastel-Kues
Weinfest - Wine Festival
All of these villages and towns have a wine festival at least once a year. There is something going on somewhere every weekend between April and October.
Bernkastel is celebrating its Weinfest the first weekend in September. Activities consist mostly of eating and drinking (wine, what else?) in the streets and listening to bands. Food and drink stalls continue all over town and along the river bank.
My video gives an example of the atmosphere in market square. It was taken in the early afternoon, though - in the evening the general mood will even be lots better.
Badstub - NOT bad at all
It is a restaurant today, next to the old townhall, but in the ancient times it was a "Badstub"
Not BAD at all, but the german word for "bathing-hall" dating back to the time, when taking a bath was only possible in one place of the village, and everybody was sitting inside of a big tub every now and then, some people once a month , some maybe once a year.
Burg Landshut - The grandest panoramas.
As we are very interested in history we were glad to have reached the ruin. Time to explore! It's always very impressive to visit such a medieval place. How did they built this? How did they get all these huge blocks of stone on top of the mountain? When did they start this? This last question was answered rather easily, it was 1277.
During the 14th and 15th century the bishops of Trier took their important decisions concerning the entire area while residing here. The fateful day for the castle was the 8th of January 1692, when a fire broke out accidentilly. Much of the castle was destroyed and the fire also destroyed all the paintings and other art treasures. Since then the castle has remained as it is today. Whenever you're not interested in ruins at all, do visit it anyway! It offers one of the most grandest panoramas in the entire Rhineland and Mosel areas. For us fun to see that even the steepest slopes on the way this belvedere are covered with vines.
After exploring the ruin and enjoying the views it was time for a refreshing Federweißer at the restaurant which is situated in this ruin. After all this it was time to start our way back to the city of Bernkastel Kues.
Burg Landshut, 54470 Bernkastel-Kues.
Situated at the rocky promontory, about 3 kilometers to the southeast of Bernkastel Keus.
Pfarrkirche St. Michael
The Pfarrkirche St. Michael was probably built in the 14th century. The church has a large number of art objects. The façade in baroque style is very much in contrast with the heavy 600 year old tower.
Castle Of Landshut
"A must see is the ruin of the Castle Of Landshut. The ruin of the Castle Of Landshut is towering the city of Bernkastel. The castle was built in 1277.
