Souvenir Shop in Boppard

by virginia4ten

I know the shop in Boppard you are talking about and am seeking a website to purchase more gifts from him. If anyone knows how to contact them, preferably on-line, I would be ever so grateful!

Travel Tips for Boppard

Explore the riverside

by Sjalen

Whatever you do, don't miss a boat trip on the Rhine. Bear in mind that because of water levels, the cruise liners and sightseeing boats only start their season in late March/early April. Once you are aware of this you have loads of alternatives. Here is a photo of the famous Loreley cliff where many a sailor is said to have drowned. More because of the difficult navigation through the river bend here than because of the old Loreley legend...There are many cliffs just like it along the Rhine but this one has a viewpoint on top too (get there from St Goarshausen) so I suppose it will always stay as peoples' favourite dramatic cliff. I love the way you can just sit and observe the river life and barges from beer gardens everywhere.

Wine Growing in and around Boppard

by RhineRoll

Boppard is a vintners town and the main reason for this is the Bopparder Hamm, a steeply sloping south-facing hill in the Rhine valley which produces some very fine white Riesling wines. Various estates have vineyards here. The appelation belongs to the Mittelrhein growing region, together with the vineyards around Bacharach lying about 25 kms south. The Mittelrhein used to be quite a good region for purchasing some real bargains, but that is mostly history now. The best producers have earned themselves an international reputation and that has led to higher prices, together with an ever more selective growing method. At least, the quality has also been improved along with the higher prices.

The best estates probably are Weingart and Matthias Müller, both being based in Spay, a village some 3kms away from Boppard. Weingarts makes quite dry superior quality Rieslings which the New York Times has raved about in a recent article. Go for the Kabinett or Spätlese wines, but expect to pay around 10 EUR per bottle. Some Weingart bottles come with an inventive and very classy glass prop sealing instead of the cork. Müller makes some very decent Grauburgunder (Pinot Gris, Pinot Grigio) in addition to slightly cheaper Rieslings starting from 5 EUR/bottle.

Pretty good are the Boppard based estates August & Thomas Perll as well as Königshof. If you would like to try a wine from nearby Bacharach, go for Toni Jost Standard Quality Rieslings will start at about 5 EUR, the Predicate wines around 8-10 EUR.

Nearly all the wines from this interesting region can be sampled locally at the Bopparder Weinkontor.

The Rhinelander

by aminata

The people along the river Rhine are open minded with a good sense of humour. They have seen so many people from all over the world during the times.

They like their wine, Strausswirtschaften (win pubs owned by a winegrower. The winefestival is the end of September/beginning of october.

Boppard has many neighbourhoods, in former times each neighbourhood chared one well. Today the all have a little fair of their own with music and fun.

Packing List

by Sjalen

If you're staying in one of the many hotels along the river promenade in Boppard you might want to bring ear plugs. As soon as you get beyond the actual promenade you're fine but there you have noise from the frequent trains on the OPPOSITE river bank. Of course the more expensive hotels have double glazing but since I never stayed in any I don't know which ones, so better safe than sorry...
