The castle tour 2: St. Christoffel
by ATLC
Once you have bought your tickets (which start about every 15 minutes), you wait until your time is called. The castle cannot be visited unguided, nor can you walk round alone.
However, you are free to photograph everything inside the castle during the tour, which is really nice.
The guide first asks for all nationalities of the group and you can get a tour explanation on paper in a huge number of languages, including Russian, Chinese, Japanese, etc. The guide will speak German (photo 1). Once this has all been arranged, he explains in short the history of the castle (photo 1 again). He points out the huge image of the patron saint of travelers, Saint Christoffel on the tower (photo 2 and 3). When you walk on, you find that the hill top on which the castl stands is flat, and that within the walls there are also separate buildings (photo 4 and 5).

The castle tour 16: end of tour
by ATLC
The tour lasted about 45 minutes. The guide actually made it very entertaining with a joke or two along the way. You leave through the same gate as you entered. But before you do, you might want to do some souvenir shopping or have a drink in the restaurant or out on the terrace. You will find the entrance to the shop and restaurant on your left, just before the wooden gate in the photo.

There are many impressive things to see inside Cochem Castle such as the Knights' Hall, the Weapon Room, the Hunting Room, medieval lady's rooms, etc. The castle is well-equipped with Renaissance and Baroque furniture, weapons, armours, crockery and all kinds of beautiful decoration, including mural paintings.

The great ceiling in the dining-hall
by globetrott
All of the ceiling in the big dining-hall is beautifully painted with great ornaments on the old wooden ceiling that dates back to the end of the 19th century.
I was really glad, that taking pictures inside the castle and even inside of the rooms was no problem at all, even when some people in our group used a flash, the guide did not care at all. In my personal opinion the "No photography"-policy in other castles is simply a clever way to sell more booklets and postcards...
great ornaments on the ceiling

Watch out for these great ornaments on the ceiling of a spiral staircase. You will get there quite at the end of the guided tour through the castle of Cochem.
This castle was certainly built with a lot of effort by the architects, who tried to rebuilt the castle according to other great palaces of the area.
Almost nothing was left, when Louis Ravene bought the ruins of the medieval castle and everything had to be built completely new.
