a lovely town to walk around

In the Roman room, noted for its ceiling construction and wall covering, there is a little surprise. A secret door... beware that you're not left behind!

Directions: Take a shuttle bus from the parking lot near the train station or do the steep climb (about 15 minutes) on foot. If by car: drive west along the Mosel, then turn right into Schlossstrasse. But beware: only about 20 places for parking!
at least i *think* this is off the beaten path. there is a great mustard mill across the mosel from the castle and most of the shopping. there is a wine cellar nearby (next door?) also, but we didn't go in there.
if you like mustard, or even just odd historical factoids, i think you'd enjoy this place. the tour isn't so much of a "tour" as walking into a room and having the tour guide explain how the make mustard... but it's still quite interesting. and the mustard is tasty! free samples are available and the staff is friendly.
Ryanair had a special offer to fly from Stockholm (Skavsta airport at Nyk?ping, south of Stockholm) to airport Hahn (Frankfurt) for almost next to nothing. Well.... that only took me 5 minutes to think over before I booked the tickets! lol :-)))
Ryanair calls the airport 'Frankfurt' but it is actually not so close to Frankfurt at all. The airport is at Hahn, which is located west of Frankfurt. But there are special busses that can bring you from the airport to the city and back again in time for your flight. See the Ryanair website for more information.
But I didn't feel like doing a city trip, the nearby Mosel-Valley was much more to my liking and closer by as well! So that's what I did, and that's what this page will be about.
The last little bit to the castle is a nice walk, hahaha, maybe especially because you know you are almost there. You can see the impressive castle on top, and on the side of the road there is a little vineyard. This early in the year the grapevines are just little sticks, still a long time away from the nice green plants loaded with grapes. But it is nice to see and realize you are in wine-country! But more about the Mosel wines in one of my later tips.
Unfortunately all the windows in the castle have been destroyed by the war (the only major damage done to the castle during the war). And as you could see in the previous picture, they all have been beautifully replaced. But there is one original window still present in the castle..... and that's this one :-)
