The Eifel, an old vulcanic region
I was going to put these few tips under the heading "Eifel" - the name of the region, but couldn't find it in the VT database. Since Daun was the place we spent the most time, I chose it.
The vulcanic Eifel is a very green area with many lakes, called Maare. It is the region in Germany with the most vulcanoes, hopefully all extinct now.Geologically they are all still very young vulcanoes, but in the human perspective some 10 000 years is quite a lot.
Near Daun there is a cold water geysir, absolutely fascinating to watch.
It is an off the beaten path region in Germany, but I'm sure great for spending the summer holidays there with children. It's also a paradise for hikers with many good trails , and for horse back riders who like to go on a longer ride.
