Make sure you see the Fortress...
by Mr_Edd_20
Make sure you see the Fortress Ehrenbreitstein, and Duetsches Eck. My best memory of Koblenz was trying to find a way into Fortress Ehrenbreitstein. We drove like an 1.5 hours to see this castle and it was closed. So instead of give up in defeat, we took a risk and tried to get in anyways. We ended up being on the wrong side jumping fences and stuff trying to get in, until we were totally blocked. So we turned around in defeat, and started to cross the river when we noticed little people looking over the edges of this castle. It was open!! so we walked to the entrance, which was an uphill battle the entire way to the castle. We were fools jumping fences to a castle already open! And I could have drove my car up to the castle parking lot, but instead we walked and jogged! What a workout
Kobern-Gondorf - just 10 km west of Koblenz
by globetrott
Kobern-Gondorf is a great place to go to from Koblenz as a daytrip, maybe in combination with Burg Eltz, Muenster-Maifeld and other villages along the river Mosel / Moselle. In Kobern-Gondorf you will drive through this interesting building on my 2nd-5th pictures: It is the " Schloss von der Leyen " , an old castle, and there was no other way to build a road, than to lead it through the innercourt of that old castle. Get out of your car and take a look around that castle, it has plenty of great details to be seen.
Not far from "Schloss an der Leyen" is another castle, Schloss Liebig. Inside Schloss Liebig you will find one of the best and most exclusive restaurants of the Mosel-valley.
Burg Katz - 25 km upstream from Koblenz
by globetrott
Katz & Maus (cat and mouse) seem to belong togeather and in fact Burg Katz is opposite of Burg Maus in St. Goarshausen, about 25 km upstream from Koblenz.
Burg Katz was destroyed by Napoleon in 1806 and reconstructed again at the end of the 19th century. Nowadays you may not visit the castle, because it is owned by the German ministry of finances and used for the recreation of their employees.
St.Goarshausen is opposite of St.Goar and quite close to the famous Loreley-rock. In St.Goarshausen you may still see some old towers - remains of the medieval townwalls.
The name "Katz" (cat) comes from the count of Katzenelnbogen, who owned quite a lot of castles along the Rhine.
__________________________
In St.Goarshausen the valley is quite narrow and I may NOT recommend to stay overnight there in a hotel - the trains are running through town all day and night !!
Instead drive on top of the Loreley-rock , it is just about 5km from St.Goarshausen and there you will not hear these noises !!
more cafes on "The Plan"
by aminata about several cafes
There are several cafes and restaurant on the square "The Plan". It is an important meeting point especially in summer. Prices and quality vary, sometimes you only pay for sitting on such a nice place. So look for prices.
Deutsches Eck
by globetrott
Deutsches Eck is a place of history and also the place, where the river Mosel (on the right of my picture) flows into the river Rhine and on my main picture I was looking out through the arcades inside the large monument at Deutsches Eck, read more about this monument in my next tip !
This place is a Must, when you are in Koblenz, it is also a nice walk along the banks of both rivers with plenty of restaurants, cafes and benches to relax.
Opposite of Deutsches Eck you may see Festung Ehrenbreitenstein at the river Rhine / Rhein and a nice camping-site at the other bank of the river Mosel / Moselle
