Inside Piper's Corner
We are going to spend 3 days visiting the Lahn and Mosel Valleys in late May.
Where to stay?
We prefer:
* mid priced small "local" hotels or pensions of gasthauses with a friendly homey atmosphere.
* My wife and I are in out mid 60's, very physically active
* We'll have a car, so parking will be a consideration.
* Prefer either a small town or Koblenz where we can explore in the evening, then drive/explore the Mosel and Lahn during the day. Then on the last day drive up the Rhein to Frankfurt.
* We're figuring somewhere in the general area of Koblenz would be central for us.
Do you have suggestions?
The hotels we are considering so far are:
* Zugbruecke
* Merkelbach
* Weinlaube
* Schloss (in Koblenz)
* Burg Liebenstein (further away, in Kamp-Bornhofen)
* maybe something near Bad Ems?
Hi,
We have stayed at the Hotel Haus Lipmann in Beilstein/Mosel and loved it. It is a small hotel right across from the Mosel River. The hotel has been in the family for many generations is very lovely. It is very inexpensive considering the accommodations and location. There is an outdoor restaurant that overlooks the Mosel (across the street).
The town of Beilstein is very picturesque. It is a delight to stroll the small street and shop. There is a great bike/hiking trail that follows the Mosel for miles. You can also pick up one of the river cruises right at the town.

I just noticed that we are neighbors. We live on Whidbey Island. A couple years ago the Times newspaper had a big spread on the Hotel.

Beilstein is certainly a pretty place in the Mosel valley well worth visiting and staying at. It is however not that central anymore -- at least when you are using the river valleys for driving. The Mosel is a heavily meandring river, driving time to Koblenz will be almost an hour. The closest smaller picturesque places to Koblenz in the Mosel valley are Kobern-Gondorf, Alken and Winningen. There are loads of smaller pensions, do make sure they are not exactly next to the railway line when going for the northern bank (Kobern-Gondorf, Winningen).

In case there is no English web page, simply write to the community stating your requirements. They will pass it to their tourist information office and it will come up with further suggestions.
If you like hiking and northern walking, I still think the Zugbrücke Hotel will be excellent for you as it offers special programs and is located right on the famous "Rheinsteig" rhine valley long distance hiking trail. All the other places have locally signposted hiking routes though which can also be very nice. There is an extremely well developed tourist structure everywhere, you can hardly go wrong.
In Koblenz you can enter one of the cruise ships to go down the Rhine. Halfway between Koblenz and Mainz you come accross the most famous rock at the Rhine River, the Loreley. A lot of songs have been composed about this rock. It is said that at night, when the full moon shines, eleves dance on top of this 120 meters (400 feet) high rock. the word "Lore" comes from the old German word for dancing, and "Lei" from "rock". This might be the real origin of the name "Loreley".
That was a day trip to Koblenz, Thise monument is located just in the middle where the 2 river 'Rhine and the Mosel' comes together. These is build in bronze and highly stepped....I find it just a pitty that these big monument not in good maintenance, these will be more attractive if they will clean regularly.

Koblenz is easily accessible by all kinds of transport.
You can get there by car on Autobahns A3, A61, A48. The airports Frankfurt, Cologne and Hahn airports are all less then 100km away from Koblenz.
The most romantic way is the get there on the Rhine or Moselle.
The Deutsches Eck (German Corner) is the triangle shaped square at the confluence of the rivers Rhine and Moselle.
The name comes from the Knights of the Deutscher Orden (German Order) who founded here a settlement back in 1216.
This fort on the other Rhine side of Koblenz might be nice viewing point. Haven´t been up, only saw it from down below. It´s on the other side of the Rhine, you can reach it by ferry and lift or by car. Think the view over the city and the two rivers is quite nice from up there....
