Jugendherberge Festung Ehrenbreitstein: Sleeping in a Fortress
This is an absolutely adorable hostel located within the walls of a fortress. The rooms are clean and comfortable. The people there are friendly and helpful. We stayed in a 6 bed dorm room with an adjoining bathroom. There are other types of rooms such as single rooms, family rooms and various sized dorm rooms.
This hostel serves one of the best breakfasts I've ever had at a hostel. The spread included various cereals, different types of buns and bread, cold meats, cheese, yogurt, coffee, tea, hot chocolate and milk. However, I would advise you to have your breakfast early if there are school children staying as they will finish up pretty much everything by 9 am or so.
Unfortunately, there is a down side, especially for those who have to walk. The hostel is located up a very steep hill. The climb up, if on foot, would easily take 30 mins. But, all is not lost because there is a cable chair that can take u up there for the price of 3 Euro, if I am not mistaken. However, the cable chair stops at 6pm.
The view of the Rhine river from the hostel is absolutely breathtaking. After a long day of travelling and sight seeing, my sisters and I would usually sit at one of the benches in the hostel's compound and enjoy the view with a nice cup of hot chocolate.

Ehrenbreitstein Youth Hostel: Good Value
The Ehrenbrietstein is an ideal to stay at if you want to be near transport services and have great views of the Moselle river.
This youth hostel was once a castle and therefore possesses its unique qualities of being very high up on a hill. This is the only major downside to the accomodation - with the fact that without a taxi or other means of transport it is very strenuous to walk up the hill. (See picture for an idea of how high up the accomodation is). During the summer there is a small "cable car" that runs up to the top, however, it is not opperated during the winter or during strong winds.
They do provide breakfast and there is a small bar where you can purchase evening meals and drinks if you prefer not to venture into the town centre.
This youth hostel, is certainly ideal for school excursions, however you do need a youth hostel membership card.
Nostalgic in some ways
Train station is at the bottom of the hill
Not far from river crossing

We ended up staying at the Hotel Adria Stuben, which was one of the nicer rooms we found in Europe. If I remember correctly, breakfast at the restaurant was included.

Schonburg @ Oberwesel
Around 295 DM/night (then US$1=2.3-2.4 DM) in September, 2001. Prices vary among rooms.
A castle hotel, perched above Rhein valley. It offers magnificent views of the Rhein river valley in the front, and rolling/hilling terrain at the back.
Every room is of different size and shape, due to the original build of the castle.
Rm 33 was in a separate courtyard above the open-air breakfast place (where serves breakfast only in nice weather time, otherwise inside the indoor dining hall).
Not every room is accessible through elevators, so be prepared to carry your luggage up to your room, or have hotel staff do it for you.
Food was excellent, with a great view of the vineyard covered hills and part of the castle ruin, the curtain wall (see photos in travelogue).

YHA Ehrenbreitstein: YHA Ehrenbreitstein
They charge normal YHA prices
The location is absolutely amazing as you can walk across the castle´s square and yard and you have a great view of the town and the surrounding area as well as of the two rivers.
The hostel itself is very clean though it might be a somewhat long walk from your room to the bathrooms. But that depends.
