a day trip to koblenz

by heidstar

I have 3 days in mainz frankfurt with my mum next week and i thought i would take her on a day trip somewhere.I had taken the train from mainz to koln once (with a german speaking friend) before and i just loved the train ride. This time i wanted to go somewhere further so i was thinking koblenz!!!
We are australian, who do not speak any english but have the trusty dictionary with us of course.
Is there a travel information bureau in the train station? We would like to visit a castle (thats easy walk for my mum)have a nice lunch and just walk around the city!! Any suggestions would be much appreciated!!!

thanks all!!!

That's not that easy. Open is this time the year the Marksburg, the best preserved castle along the Rhine. The "Marksburg Express" does however not run in winter. You may want to take a taxi up from Braubach station up to the castle.

Is your start point Mainz or Frankfurt. This makes quite a difference ticket wise. Mainz is for the Middle Rhine Valley the better base.

You could do a round trip by train: Mainz - Bingen - Koblenz - Braubach - Wiesbaden - Mainz. You can also do a part of the trip by boat.

Bingen dep 10:10
St. Goarshausen arr 11:40
from there by train to Braubach

Koblenz and Bingen as railway knots got their share of bombs in WWII. More authentic are the other towns along the Rhine like Rüdesheim, Bacharach, Oberwesel, St. Goar, Braubach etc. Cute and compact medieval towns.

All cities and towns have their tourist offices. Frankfurt tourist office has a branch in the Hauptbahnhof (main train station).

With the smaller towns it won't be in the station but by the nature of these places not far away.

Travel Tips for Koblenz

by kindretspiri

Try to get friends with the inhabitans of Koblenz. They are very warm and hospitable people. I got so warm welcome when I was there. Koblenz lies on very beatiful place, on the crossings of the Rhein and the Mosel. In the city there is lots to see. Mostly I miss my friend who lives in Koblenz.

Whine drinking

by Marie-Claude

Whine tasting is something we saw in a few places in Koblenz. You go in a particular wine bar and then you can taste the local Rhein valley wines. Most of them were closed during our stay in January.. but I think you should try it.

Burg Lahneck - just 6 km from Koblenz

by globetrott

Burg Lahneck is in a distance of just 6 km from Koblenz and you will see it already from the highway, when driving along the river Rhine. Lahnstein was built high above the place, where the river LAHN flows into the Rhine.
This beautiful and interesting castle dates back to 1245 and you may visit it only with a guided tour. Tours are daily 10.00a.m. - 05.00 p.m. between easter and end of October.
Unfortunately I did not go inside, as for the next tour I would have to have waited 1,5 hours :-((
Just a few meters from the castle, you may see a great restaurant with a lovely terrace facing the Rhine-valley and with a great view on castle Kapellen-Stolzenfels, that was built at the other side of the river Rhine. There is also a camping-site close to Burg Lahneck.

Ice Creams

by steventilly about No Idea!

While we had our cakes and beer in the square at Boppard we noticed people wandering by with ice creams and we really needed one, so we paid a visit to the nearby icecream shop. Coffee & Chocolate Ice Cream

The "Four Towers"

by wadekorzan

When you leave the Munzplatz and head down the pedestrian shopping zone, you get to a corner where you see the Pizza Hut. look up and you will see the famous four towers. These beautiful little towers, found on each corner, were all built after the reconstruction around 1689-1690.

The tower above Pizza Hut, and the one adjacent with the shield that says Hauptwache, date back to the 1690's, and were not destroyed by bombs in WWII. The tower above the "Apoteke" (pharmacy) was partially destroyed when the upper floor burned, and the tower above the tobacco store was completely destroyed in WWII. This very spot is marks the boundary of much of the bombing. Going back towards Munzplatz, most everything was spared in WWII, where as in the other direction, everything else was bombed.
