The Rhine Hotel-Restaurant Merkelbach is a great place to stay, and there are a few reasons why. The best and most obvious reason is its location right on the Rhine River. I booked a Double Room Comfort (room #4), and I got a spacious room with a huge balcony overlooking the Rhine, for only 90 Eur a night in the high season. The room was very comfortable, with a large bed, a table with two chairs inside and a table with two chairs on the balcony, a big closet, a stand up air conditioner type unit that worked quite well, and lots of space. This is a family run hotel, run by a husband and wife, and for my whole stay I only ever saw the wife. She prepared breakfast every morning and was there all day. She’s a very nice lady, and although I don’t speak German and she didn’t speak very much English, she was still friendly. I was with one of my German friends, and they were chatting away in German, and she recommended us to a very good German restaurant called Maximilian. The hotel was very clean. There is also free wifi, which was awesome. The only downside is that all of the rooms are up at least 2 flights of stairs, so this might be an issue for some people. There are a few parking spots at the side of the hotel. Breakfast is included and had all of the typical things; bread, jam, meat, cheese, eggs, yogurt, cereal and some fruit. A cab from the main train station took about 7 minutes and cost about 8 EUR.Website: www.hotel-merkelbach.de
