Beach in Mainz
by jenniferhamrick
We're new to Mainz and would like to find a beach to take the kids to. I read in one post that there are artificial beaches along the Rhine. Can anyone give me specific directions? (Are there multiple beaches or is there only one?) We're in Wiesbaden.

Take care that the Rhine Maids don't lure into the river. Due the strong currents and heavy traffic on the Rhine swimming there is really dangerous. The city of Wiesbaden just placed (again) a strong appeal not to try it.
Lakes with beaches and or for bathing published by the Wiesbadener Kurier (but are partly not really close to Wiesbaden):

There is also a beach in Mainz-Kasel (thus on the Wiesbaden side of the Rhine), but this one looks not as family friendly to me.

Be very, very careful with any artificial beach along the Rhine when you take your kids. I live near the Rhine and there are deadly accidents each year, because people underestimate the currents. Taking your children to a swimming-pool or a lake is much safer.
Travel Tips for Mainz
Stage entrance
by Nemorino
On the cover of their 120-page season schedule book for 2004/2005 the State Theater in Mainz has an intriguing photo of their stage entrance at night.
When I was there the other night for the opera premiere I decided to see if I could duplicate that photo with my little digital camera.
Well, it came out all right, I guess, but theirs is better because they managed to blur the part inside the door while maintaining readability of the neon sign Bühneneingang, which means "stage entrance".
Maybe they did that on the computer some way, I don't know. Anyway theirs looks more mysterious than mine does, because in theirs you can't make out the prosaic details such as the table, chairs and a wastepaper basket.
You can pick up their season schedule book for free in the entrance lobby on the ground floor.
Stadtpark -- Bundeschiessen Fountain
by yooperprof
The "Bundeschiessen" was some kind of a national festival/gathering that was held in Mainz in 1894. The Bundeschiessen Memorial Fountain in the city park offers pleasant views offer the city and the Rhine Valley beyond.
Theatrum Mogontiacensium
by Nemorino
Right next to the south station in Mainz there is an archaeological excavation site called Theatrum Mogontiacensium.
With the help of numerous volunteers, including local school children and also some of the Americans who live in the area, archaeologists are gradually uncovering the remains of a huge Roman theater that once had room for ten thousand spectators, which is roughly eleven times as many as can now be seated in the large hall of the State Theater in Mainz.
The wood and metal construction is meant to show the shape of the theater, and where the first six rows of seats used to be. The stage in Roman times was where the station and tracks are located now.
Cafe Extra Blatt
by antistar about Cafe Extra Blatt
This is a very trendy, cool and relaxed cafe in the market place in the shadow of the Cathedral. Despite it's excellent food and location the prices are very reasonable. The staff are also extremely friendly, and even though they all seem to speak perfect English, they are very happy to let you practice your German without getting flustered and trying to rush you. I came here for lunch and enjoyed a big plate of food, and a three-quarter litre glass of mineral water for less than ten euros. We came back later for drinks a couple of nights running, and it was a great place for an evening drink as well.
St Stephen and Marc Chagall windows
by dilydim
This is a small church tucked away on a hill in the Old Town not to be confused with the Dom, the main cathedral. While most tourists are flocking to its more popular sister, you can have this gem all to yourself. This church has exited for about ten centuries and has been nearly demolished during Word War II. During its reconstruction Marc Chagall has been invited to do its stained windows. While still conforming to classic expectations, they bright color and edginess of compositions, offer a rewarding break from traditional church art.
