Christmas Market
by Stevo_Jess
If you are in Mainz during Christmas time, please visit the Christmas markets. Generous choice of great food and gifts. We love their Mushroom dish and also the German Sausages ! We can never get enough of it !
Also try the Gruwine (Warm Mulled Wine). This promise to warm you up in the freezing winter. This is how Christmas should be celebrated !
Christuskirche
by yooperprof
In the rapidly descending twilight of an early January afternoon, I didn't have time to take a moment and step inside the Christuskirche. But I did snap a picture of its impressive copper dome.
The Christuskirche was dedicated in 1903, and was part of a Wilhelmine project to bring an imperial and stately air to what were then the northern suburbs of the city. A little pompous and grandiose, perhaps, something it shares with many other projects undertaken during the reign of Kaiser Wilhelm II (1888-1918). Appropriately, it stands in the median of Kaiserstrasse.
Theatrum Mogontiacensium with a Regional Express
by Nemorino
Ever since 1884, when this railway line was built, it has been known that the ancient Romans had something at this site. But exactly what it was, and how big, has only gradually become evident, especially in the last five years of systematic excavation.
Mogontiacum was the Roman name for what is now Mainz and vicinity, and it was important to them particularly as a strategic location because of the confluence of the Main and Rhine Rivers.
In the 11th century, a historian named Gozwin wrote: "Hoc etiam astruunt adhuc superstites theatri ruinae, quod Romano more ad ludos circenses et theatrica spectacula constructum est".
Any questions?
Bistro Bei Vincenzo
by antistar about Bistro Bei Vincenzo
I enjoyed my pasta here, but I've had better. My Milanese friend wasn't overly impressed, although it was definitely authentic Italian, unlike some of the other places in town. The guys were all from the Naples region, according to my friend, judging by the strong accents. Not great, but not bad either, and a safe choice for Italian food if you are on this side of town.
Walk around Rhine River
by Stevo_Jess
The Mainz portion of the Rhine River is lovely but it is hard to compare them with the part outside of mainz. Still worth a nice walk anytime of the day.
