I can't find a hotel in Frankfurt for Sept 19 and have a flight from Frankfurt airport in the morning of Sept 20. Would anyone know of an economical and interesting place to stay in Mainz and a way to get to the airport in the early morning?
Also, if I arrive in the afternoon, whiat sightseeing is available?

16.-21. September there is the Automechanika trade fair in Frankfurt. Which may well book also Mainz.

www.booking.com shows plenty of hotels for your date, although none of them are particularly cheap.

Pick a hotel either close to central station or to station "Römisches Theater".
The S-Bahn (cityrail type of local trains) takes you to the airport in some 20-25 minutes, these trains run frequently. The above mentioned website www.bahn.de will help you to look up the connections.

Try staying in kelsterbach or raunhiem or Russelsheim. these are very close to Frankfurt. At least closer than Mainz.
We stayed at the TOP Hotel Hammer directly across from the train station in Mainz and it was great. About 20 mins to Frankfurt airport, if I remember rightly, on the S-Bahn. From the Hammer you can walk to the main sights in Mainz.
No proper German city of the 19th century was without its own municipal theatre! The good burgers of Mainz jointly funded this project in the proud 19th century, dedicating the stage in 1831.
Recent reconstruction created new stages behind the 19th century facade, and mean that the theatre will continue to function through the 21st century.
January 2007 - just a few days after New Year's - and flowers are in bloom in sunny areas in Mainz. Winter flowers perhaps, but it is still rather remarkable. Well, no wonder the Romans planted their grape vines here. There is indeed something of a "Rhenish microclimate" which is milder than you might expect for a place of this latitude.
Looking upstream (south), this is the Rhine coming down from Lake Constance (Bodensee) by way of Schaffhausen, Basel, Freiburg, Strasbourg and Mannheim.
Second photo: Here again is the city of Mainz as seen from Mainspitze, on the other side of the Rhine River.
Along main strolling street (Augustinerstrasse) you can find a lot of decent spots; this one is an italian andf they serve interesting stuff. I just tried some "bruschetta" and they were quite delicious, with fresh stuff.
I also saw other courses on table around and they all looked ok.
Visiting the ZDF (German TV station) is very interesting, but you have to book tours many months before you'll visit! But I dont know if they have tours in English!
