Canadians traveling to Mainz

by lapsycrafter

My husband and I (both in our 60's) are planning a 6 day trip to Germany. We will be arriving in Frankfurt Aug.27 6:30am. We've been told the best place to start our visit to the Rhine is Mainz north. Also mentioned is Rudesheim. We wanted to stay at gasthaus-stahl.de,looks nice on the internet.
My question: Are these towns close,of course the thought of no speed limits interest my husband.(me not so much) Is it a good idea to rent a car or travel by bus and train. We are interested in wineries. My husband is not much of a walker
Also want to take a river cruise
Any help with setting up an itinerary would be of great help.

Ruedesheim is roughly 20 miles away from Mainz, and there ought to be a speed limit!
The most obvious difference is that Mainz is a city with 200,000 citizens. Ruedesheim, in contrast, is a town with less than 10,000 residents.
Mainz does have an old town, but Ruedesheim is clearly the favourite among tourists: It can be crowded there.

I would choose public transport to get from Frankfurt Airport to either Mainz (if you want to stay there) and rent a car to explore the area, for instance Burg Eltz or Burg Katz.

As for the river cruise, I'd take the tour from Bingen or Ruedesheim to Sankt Goarshausen (at least), better yet to Koblenz. From Koblenz take the train back to Mainz.

I mentioned Burg Katz, but please note that said cstle is not open to visitors.

It's up to you whether you want the faff of renting a car, but you will find public transport in Germany to be safe, comfortable and efficient (and reasonably-priced, imo).

http://www.bahn.de/international/view/en/index.shtml

will give you train times, details and fares in English.

Mainz> Rudesheim takes about an hour by train, costs about 10.5 euro.

No speed limits? In theory perhaps. But in real life there is so much road work and heavy traffic, that you can hardly ever drive "as fast you want to".
August is also the height of the tourist season, with most of the German schools having their summer holidays, ao expect even more traffic than usual.

The wife and I just visited that area in November based in Wiesbaden (across the Rhine from Mainz. Take the train from frankfurt to wiesbaden (thru Mainz) then for fun we later took a train from wiesbaden to Koblenz. (highly recommended) you can see along the river and get off and on in many towns along the way. (even rudeshime)...Be sure to take a cab from the station in Koblenz across the river and up the hill to the old prussion fort for lunch or dinner (fantastic and very reasonably price) the view if fantastic overlooking the Mosel flowing into the Rhine...its all on my wiesbaden page.....

Well you will get allot of diverse comments. I prefer Koblenz myself, take the train up-river to Mainz, south, spend the evening and then river cruise back down to Koblenz.

The total distance between Koblenz and Mainz is about 100k, not far at all.

Once you are there you may find a longer cruise that suits you. The train basically follows the river so getting back is usually easy, as long as the landing and the train are on the same side of the river, just ask.

Vineyards line the walls of the River canyon, so finding a small local winery should not be hard at all.

Travel Tips for Mainz

Dom Millenium Marker

by yooperprof

Mainz has been a cathedral city for over a thousand years, a fact commemorated by this bronze monument in the central square.

The monument is decorated with images depicting the city's history, including a scene from the Second World War, with a Star of David, and flames from the devastating air raids.

This is the Burg Staleck...

by Venturingnow

This is the Burg Staleck which houses the youth hostel. It's a really lovely place with such a great view! Even if you're not staying at the youth hostel you've got to walk up the pathway and take in the courtyard views of the river from high up on the hill.

pub? church? hospital? - Heilig geist

by tessy

I saw that entrance and wanted to know what is hidden behind. It looked from outside like a church. I made a short look inside - It is a pub. My friend told me that it was a hospital in the 19th century, also a little church. Unfortunately we didn't have the time to go inside, next time perhaps!

Wine bar

by tessy about Weinhaus zum Spiegel

Weinhaus zum Spiegel is another traditional restaurant/wine bar. You can find there typical dishes of the region, like in Augustinerkeller.
Have a look at the pic: you'll see the cathedral in the back again!

Mainz Cathedral

Mainz Cathedral, formally known in English as St. Martin Cathedral (in German Mainzer Dom, sometimes Der Hohe Dom zu Mainz) is located near the historical center and pedestrianized market square of the city of Mainz. This Roman Catholic cathedral is the site of the episcopal see for the Bishop of Mainz. wikipedia
