Mainz Cathedral
by Stevo_Jess
This is a very imposing Building. Though it is not as high as the koln Dom, it is still a very good landmark in Mainz.
We did not enter the Dom but it is very beautiful just viewing it from outside of it. We took several good picture of it.
Beautiful architectural which is a must for all visitor to see in Mainz. Beautiful Photos
SWR3 open air festival
by Kristina1701
Every July the swr3 open air music festival takes place in the "Regierungsviertel" of Mainz. It usually starts in the early afternoon and ends around midnight. The entry is free so it is always pretty crowded!
The bands performing in the afternoon are usually the not so well-known ones, towards the evening more well-konwn as well as popular bands perfom.
As far as I know you're not allowed to bring your own drinks etc. to the festival but there are lots of drink and food stalls, so no worries ;-)
Bingen
by Stevo_Jess
Bingen is about 1 hr by train from Mainz. Easily accessible from Bahnhof .
Recommended to visit the town as the best way to understand the lower rhine culture is to visit the towns outside of the cities.
Nice friendly people there. Great view of the Rhine and some ruins including the castle in the middle of the town.
Great views

Take a walk over the Theodor- Heuss bridge to Kastel, turn right and about 100 yards along the river is this lovely little bar. Sit outside in their heated terrace for great views of the river and city......magic!
Iris und Mater Mga Heiligtum Museum
by dprosia
This is a great musuem. It is small and can be seen in about an hour or hour and a half. It is free, but they do ask that you consider giving a donation after you've seen the museum. I am an American living in Mainz and any time I take guests here they find this museum very interesting and donate something. It is located underground (stairs only) at the Romerpassage, which is Mainz's shopping mall in the new part of town. When they were digging to make the shopping mall (which is a very small 2 floor mall) they came across Roman ruins, thus the museum. The labels are in German, but you can buy a book at the information desk in English. It is a very nice and inexpensive book and definatly worth the money. If you are not interested in the book you can figure out most everything. They have a short film that plays every 20 minutes or so that helps explain some of what is in the museum (there is no dialog). On a side note, the best ice cream in Mainz in located in this mall. You can go upstairs to the restaurant to sit and eat, or stay on the main floor and grab a cone. There is also a public bathroom here - upstairs.
