Ferienwohnung Oberstraße: A Smaller two bedroom apartment
My mutter and sis stayed in this apartment. It is a little smaller than the one we stayed in and did not have any good views from the windows. However, it is closer to the train station, right in town, and a minute walk to the Rhein. It is owned by the same family from whom we rented our apartment and it is clean, well kept up, and cheery.
Unique Quality: a one minute walk to train station;
on a small side street in the center of St. Goar

Wolter's: A two bedroom apartment
Very well kept apartment. Lots of room and very clean. Close to St. Goar center. Only thing: train rides quite close by. Mostly I slept right through the trains running through at night, but if you are a light sleeper, they would most likely wake you.
Unique Quality: The two bedrooms had sinks in them. So if someone is in the shower, no problem. The toilet is in its own little closet too.

schloss hotel: Stay "in" a castle and treated like royalty
Perfect stay! We arrived last minute and needed a place to stay and were lucky to get a jr.suit in this great hotel. We had a very nice meal, a great swim in the pool and sat on the balcony overlooking the rhien river with a bottle of wine from the Rhein valley. The service was fantastic! Everyone was very pleasant and helpful form the first to the last. The receptionist helped us to our room with our luggage, after lowering the price of the room from 220 to 180 euro (they had a last minute cancelation). Our server (dressed in traditional attire) was very nice and treated my 2 four yearolds like princesses. Even the housekeeping staff went out of thier way to be sure we were all set up with the extra bedding and children sized robes - oh, and when I forgot MY pillow in the room after checking out, on return to claim it the housekeeping staff already had it in a thick plastic bag and tagged. Cannot say a bad word abou this hotel. Location is good (being right at the castle) it is a steep climb down to the center but it is not far and I saw people of all ages doing it.

Loreley-Jugendherberge St. Goar: Youth Hostel under the castle
They did not have any single rooms, so I got a double for the price of a single. For EUR 13.50 including breakfast it was quite OK. Simple, but clean. There was a smell of old house in the bathroom, I guess it is difficult to avoid since it IS an old house. The first night the place was full of 8 - 10 year old kids on some kind of school trip. Apparently it is a very popular place for school excursions. Very popular amongst bikers, too, a couple of different groups arrived the second day. There is a swimming pool that I did not use, and a nice terrace right where the path up to the castle starts.
My room was in the back building (pic. 2), and I did NOT hear the trains!
Unique Quality: I prefer to spend my money on other things than accomodation. Afterall, I don't spend much time in the room while I am travelling. If you are like me, this is the right place for you.

Schlosshotel Schoenburg in Oberwesel: a noble 5star castle-hotel
Schlosshotel Schoenburg in Oberwesel is just about 8km upstream from St.Goar and it is certainly one of the very best and most exclusive castle-hotels along the river Rhine. The old castle dates back to the 10th century and today the castle is used partly as a luxury hotel and partly also as a "Kolpingheim / hostel" and another hotel inside of modern buildings next to the castle-hotel's parkingsite.
Unique Quality: Schlosshotel Sch?nburg in Oberwesel has a great terrace with a perfect view of the Rhine-valley. You have to leave your car at the parking and your luggage will be taken with a small truck to the hotel. all of the great rooms are facing the river and also the restaurant is well known for its perfect cuisine. The walk from the parking to the hotel is about 5 minutes.

Hostel Burg Stahleck in Bacharach: One of Germany's greatest youth-hostels
Burg Stahleck in Bacharach is in a distance of just 15km upstream from St.Goar and it might be the highlight for your stay in the Rhine- and Mosel-valley, in case that you are a budget-traveller and have to search for a cheap price of your accomodation. Burg Stahleck offers a perfect panorama-view over the Rhine-valley at moderate prices - see the link to their webpage !
Unique Quality: You may enter the castle freely and without restriction. As a hostel-guest you may even use the great table-tennis at one of the terraces - see my pictures !!
The noises of trains are far away and you may sleep well there !!

Lahneck camping in Lahnstein: a camping-site close to castle Lahneck
About 30km downstream from St.Goar, at the right bank of the river Rhine you will find this camping-site in a side-valley of the Rhine, in Lahnstein, not far from Koblenz. In a distance of just about 100 meters you may see a great castle : Burg Lahneck - read more about it under my tips "off the beaten path"
Unique Quality: The camping Lahneck is on a mountain, about 400 meters from the river, so the floods of the river are NO problem there, BUT unfortunately also the view on the Rhine-valley is missing from there, but from the nearby restaurant you may at least see the castle Kapellen-Stolzenfels.
The noises of the trains are far away, so you may definitely sleep well there !!

Loreley - Camping in St.Goar: A Camping-site opposite of the Loreley-rock
Just opposite of the famous Loreley-rock you may find a good camping-site directely at the river Rhine in St.Goar.
In the old legends there is a beautiful, young lady sitting on top of the rock, singing and combing her hair...
...many sailors lost their lifes, when they started to watch that lady instead of concentrating on the river. In fact this part of the Rhine is the most dangerous and trafic-lights for ships will regulate the alternating one-way-trafic there still nowadays.
Unique Quality: In general Camping close to the river Rhine might be dangerous, as floods may happen several times a year.I remember plenty of campgrounds with Caravans inside the water, when I was working for KD-German Rhinelines in 1980.
There will be a lot of noise all night, because the train-line is quite close to the camping-site !!

Reichenstein castle-hotel: a castlehotel high above the Rhine
Reichenstein castle is about 40km upstream from St.Goar and also at the left bank of the Rhine. The castle dates back to the 11th century. In the 13th century the castle belonged to one of the most dangerous robber-barons, and as the castle had such an important position in the Rhine-valley, the emperor decided to destruct the castle and set the robber-baron into prison. It lasted 4 years to get hold of him and he was finally "made one head shorter" , as we say it in German...
Unique Quality: Today Castle Reichenstein is a great hotel, high above the valley and almost no noise of the train-line will get to your sleepingroom. You may also visit a museum there in another part of the castle-ruins !
No noises of trains at this castle-hotel !!

Hotel Burg Liebenstein in Kamp-Bornhofen: Another great castle-hotel close to St.Goar
Hotel Burg Liebenstein is an interesting hotel in Kamp-Bornhofen at the right bank of the river Rhine, about 10 km downstream from St.Goarshausen or 40km upstream from Koblenz, and it offers a great panorama-view and lots of possibilities to go hiking.
The castle-hotel Burg Liebenstein is quite remote and it offers a few great rooms at reasonable prices - just click on the link below !
I was there in early april, the week before easter and there were just a very few guests, as the street going up is quite steep.
Unique Quality: They have a great interior with several old Iron armouries, an open fireplace and lovely furniture - see my pics of the restaurant.
NO noises of the trains also at this hotel !!
