Cuckoo clock
by Nathalie_B
As you enter St. Goar, at the beginning of the main shopping street you’ll spot a big store with a huge cuckoo clock hanging outside. Apparently this is another landmark of St. Goar – the biggest free-hanging cuckoo clock in the world! It is over 30 years old and has been renovated recently after it was hit by storm in 2004.
What really special is that 2 cuckoos (1 on each side) are popping out the clock that is 2.5 meters wide and 3.5 meters high. Everything is handmade, carved from wood and hand painted, the masterpiece took 7 month to be completed.
Actually this was the first thing that caught my eye and attention once I entered the village. Without a doubt it’s a very impressive piece of art.

If you need to use a computer, Hotel Montag has internet access. It is located right at the beginning of Heerstrasse, the end towards the castle view. Look for the huge bier stein of their store, you can't miss that!
Cute House of St Goar
by Onski
This is not a huge off the beaten track tip, but head up in the hills above St Goar (if you can get around the small roads) There are the cutest little houses, much like Tudor houses. I think they rock and they all have murals of things such as harvesting on the side. My compliments to the owners of the house pictured. Sorry if you dont like your house on display on the net but your house was cool and I liked it. Also some great views from the top of the hills looking down on the Rhine.
Bacharach - a romantic town,20 km from St.Goar
by globetrott
About 20km upstream from St.Goar, at the left bank of the river Rhine / Rhein you will get to Bacharach. It is certainly one of the most romantic villages along the river Rhine. When passing by it on a cruise or by car you will first of all see that wall of houses facing the river : it was the former medieval townwall and serves still today as a certain wall against the noises of the trains passing by there all day and night !!
So you have to choose your hotel carfully in order to be able to sleep in Bacharach !
Park your car and walk into the town behind the townwall and you will see plenty of great half-timbered houses and a great church. See my next tips about "Posthof" and "St.Peter"-church !
Bacharach is 20km upstream from St.Goar, at the left bank of the river Rhine and pretty close to the "Pfalz"
Burg Express

Use the train to avoid climbing when going up to Burg Rheinfels, or take the trip for fun and to have a quick sightseeing of the historical part of St. Goar. It is a cute little train, and the driver gives some comments along the route. Departure three times every hour from 9:30 to 18 in the period from easter to 1 November. The price of a return ticket is 3 € for adults, 2 for children.
Being a train freak I just had to try it even though we stayed in the youth hostel right below the castle. I had to pay a little more than half price for the one way ticket, but the moose went for free :-) We both enjoyed the ride very much. After a lot of walking in St. Goarshausen and on the Lorelay cliff, we could relax in this slow moving vehicle and enjoy the views on our way. Absolutely worth the price.
