arriving in St. Goar by train?
by hallekatze
I will come from Frankfurt Airport by train. Will be staying in St. Goar. THere are only 3 trains in the morning from Frankfurt to St. Goar and it takes 3 hrs.
Does it seem reasonable to take the train to St. Goarshausen and then ferry across?
Also. We are staying in a youth hostel in St. Goar. I can't find a "city" map of St. Goar. Beginning to think it was a bad idea. Does anyone know how far it is and how accessible it might be? Is there any public transportation in the town? After a 24 hr. trip, would rather not hike straight up the mountain with luggage.

Hi,
google is your friend... :)
Try this for a direct jump to Sankt Goar:
http://www.google.de/maps?hl=de&q=jugendherberge&near=Sankt+Goar+56329&cid=0,0,15913307532421123104&f=d&daddr=Bismarckweg+17,+56329+St.+Goar,+Germany&ie=UTF8&z=15&ll=50.156226,7.711115&spn=0.012978,0.028925&om=1&iwloc=A
On the Youth Hostel page it says 10 minutes walk from the trainstation. If you have much to carry, you still can call a cab. But I don't think it will be necessary, cause the train station (Sankt Goar) is here:
http://www.google.de/maps?f=q&hl=de&q=Sankt+Goar+56329+Bahnhof&layer=&sll=50.151648,7.711201&sspn=0.00649,0.014462&ie=UTF8&z=16&ll=50.15162,7.713325&spn=0.00649,0.014462&t=h&om=1&iwloc=addr
So keep up your good mood! It is a great area with an interessting landscape!
Take care and have fun, Christian.

Just checked the train times, cause I wondered about the three hours. I found connections with 1h 20min from Francfort Airport to St.Goar. Did you use the Bundesbahn page?
http://reiseauskunft.bahn.de/bin/query.exe/en?ld=212.18&seqnr=1&ident=9d.01435418.1178040150&newrequest=yes&
Enter:
From: FRA FrankfurtAirport
To: St Goar
This should spit you out some connections. You can then click on the connection to see where you have to change trains (most probable in Bingen).
Take care, Christian.

You have to select "St. Goar" from the drop-down list at the DB timetable.
One of the few cases I know where the default "St. Goar Rathaus" is nonsense.

Possible. But certainly not reasonable. Did you select "St. Goar KD" or something?

See the lowest photo on the right for the location. The youth hostel is approx. 10-15 altitude meters above the town centre.
Than remember the map linked above. The youth hostel was stretching over one field. Now you can guess the distance to the railway station. And why there is no public transport inside the town.
Travel Tips for Sankt Goar
Enjoy the Rhine view from Rhinefels Castle
by Toshioohsako
When you get to the Castle, just walk around. You will find spots from where you can shoot magnificent Rheine River landscape. Its interesting to watch long and thin cargo ships passing by. The city and the view around it and opposite-side Rhine River villages
St. Goar Cuckoo Clock still holds world record
by Rhondaj
Well, there are other cuckoo clocks this big, but this one is exceptional because it has two faces. It is the largest free-hanging cuckoo clock in the world. So while you are prancing up and down the pedestrian shopping street, make sure to look up and take note.
Unveiled in 1973, it is 3.5 meters high and 2.5 meters wide. It took 7 months to build this clock of linden wood.
A few tips
by Rhondaj
The tourist office located on the main pedestrian street, Heerstrasse, has a baggage room you may use free of charge. It does not state on my brochure though, for how long. No matter how clear the sky looks each morning, you should carry along with you each day, your umbrella. We found the weather to be very changeable. Luckily the showers that came along from time to time were brief and light. Guess it's just what those grapes need to grow just right. So no complaining. We are getting some mighty fine wine from this weather!
The Marksburg in Braubach - 25km from St.Goar
by globetrott
About 25km downstream from St.Goar, at the right bank of the river Rhine / Rhein you will see Marksburg. It is the only medieval castle in the area of Middle-Rhine, that was almost not changed or adapted afterwards and that was never destoyed.
Marksburg is also the seat of the "Deutsche Burgenvereinigung" (German castle assosiation) and holds a big library with 12000 books.
The castle is 150 meters above the Rhine and you may drive up by car or take a small road-train from Braubach, a lovely village, also worth a visit !
The castle is open for visitors daily 10.00a.m.-05.00p.m. and photography inside the castle is allowed !
Burg Lahneck - 30km from St.Goar
by globetrott
About 30km downstream from St.Goar you may see Burg Lahneck at the right bank of the river Rhine / Rhein. It is a really interesting castle, built high above the place, where the river LAHN flows into the Rhine.
The castle dates back to 1245 and you may visit it with a guided tour only. Tours are daily 10.00a.m. - 05.00 p.m. between easter and end of October.
Unfortunately I did not go inside, as for the next tour I would have to have waited 1,5 hours :-((
Just a few meters from the castle, you may see a great restaurant with a lovely terrace facing the Rhine-valley and with a great view on castle Kapellen-Stolzenfels. There is also a camping-site close to Burg Lahneck.
