Trier Tip
by tessy
Trier seems to be the oldest city of Germany. And you feel the history everywhere. When I was a teenager, I was always excited when I read in the paper about works at Trier, and the workers found again some coins or some parts of roman stuff when building a house or a street.
Roman ruins and riverside views

I would see Porta Nigra. We came off-season so there were no boat trips but a trip along the Moselle is something I will definately do next time. Also, if you're there in season, go wine tasting in the villages. All of it! From taxi drivers to restaurant staff, everyone was very friendly.
Enjoy the tier forest

from the city center, go to the south, accros the mosel river, climb up the hills, leave the town, there you are.....you'll get the trier forest. Here you can hiking, jogging, playing with your dog, mountain biking, playing soccer (there is a soccer field!), visiting a small zoo, feeding wild pigs your old bread, folowing a brook until you get your self back to Mosel valley again, have a picnic of course, dining at wiess haus restaurant, etc. I visit the forest once a week but never get bored. You'll always find a new path that leads you to an unexpecting place, it's a kind of surprice. Look at the beauty of the trier sandstone... it is older than the huge one in Luxemburg.
Swimming in Mosel
by drei3t
This is for the most courageous ones: swimming in Mosel in the middle of winter. There is of course no ice because the stream is so powerful, so it is fairly easy just to take of your clothes and jump to the river.
The water is a bit warmer than in Finland in the winter, maybe about 5 degrees. Beware for the strong stream. You don't need any equipment whatsoever.
Garden of 'Kurfürstliche' Palace
by ultchuk
Don't know if this is really an of the beaten Path Trip but it sure felt like that. Near the 'KonstantinsBasilika' and behind the 'Kurfürstliche' Palace there's a great garden where you can enjoy and relax a bit. At least I did so. And when you're done you can just walk 100 metres and you will be at the 'Rheinisches Landesmuseums'.
